Do you want somebody to love..

To be fair, even though I don't like him at all, I respect the fact that he's one of the classiest defenders ever to lace boots for us.

Cracking player (I'd pick him and Jocky at CB in the All-Time XI - Sami would be on the bench) but a thundercnut of the first order. You were absolutely right to nominate him.

Auch I think most Liverpool fans have forgiven Heskey. I'd buy him a pint now, even if I wanted him dead at some stages in his last seasons.

I have to say that despite recent years of Lawro acting like a prick on TV he's probably one of the best defenders we've had. Probably the best tackler. My father who I inherited this Liverpool curse from used to love Lawro. When I was a kid I remember him as the tough guy at the back with the big moustache. I also remember watching old VHS tapes of Liverpool in the 80s with my Dad and he'd tell me to keep my eyes on Lawro just before he went for the ball. Monster of a defender.
Sure, I can't stand him at times but he's still a Liverpool legend and compared to Owen, he never sold us out during his playing days.

There's lots to hate about Owen. He seemed to prefer playing for England, he sold us out to go to Real Madrid, he joined Newcastle when he could have stood his ground, signed for Man U etc.

I was just about ready to defend him, but I just can't find it in me to do it.
I look back at the great memories of him winning us the FA cup final, carrying us for several seasons, scoring in the league cup final vs Man U and also scoring in Uefa cup final, but all of that is overshadowed by how he treated the club and the fans afterwards. It's sad really, how it all turned out. But in the end, it's his own fault.

I don't think it's fair to say that his exit from the club overshadowed what he'd done for us. Especially when it comes to those finals/trophies.
After all, other players have done worse since and I read posters on here saying they'd welcome them back with open arms. And that's players who haven't done as much for the club as Owen.

For me it was less his original exit from LFC, about which I'd agree with your comparison, and more his unnecessary baiting of the club when he joined the Mancs, via more than one interview in which he listed the "great clubs" he'd played for and "accidentally on purpose" managed to miss LFC out. I don't hate him, but I definitely don't love him either.

I think what made Owen's various comments so striking was the fact that he used to be so ultra-careful about PR, so it was hard to assume, as one might have with other players, that he was just speaking without thinking. He probably was, but the slickness of his old PR dealings turned into a curse when his career started to decline and he talked more than he played.

Since when was Joey Barton a "cracking" player?

It must be all those call ups for the England team.
