Do we even need to be a great side?

Blob on post from Ryan, for once I'm in 100% agreement.

If our 2 strikers can keep us in it till January, and we can avoid injuries, then I don't see why we couldn't get that bit extra in the window (possibly from a tram dropping out of CL) to challenge till the end.

The same old formula still applies:

- Build a solid foundation
- Instill the right mentality and work ethic
- Get players that will score you goals
- Hope that your rivals falter

I like this, it's dead on and points 1 & 2 are what it seems Rodgers is trying to instil in the team and with the other, missing from the list, vital ingredient (confidence) we can go far as we have point 3 and point 4 will happen to all teams this season, it is that open.

However back to the OP. Most teams are built around 4 or 5 top quality players with sufficiently good enough players around them. I mentioned in a thread at the start of the season that most title winning teams in recent times were one of two types, a) a single dominant goal scorer who will get you 20-30 a season or b) 3 or 4 players that scored 10-15 each. Well we have two in the a) mould and as we showed before Suarez came back we are still capable of winning matches when one is missing. With both in the team we are near irresistible, averaging 3 goals a game over the past 4 PL games.

Add into the mix excellent players such as Gerrard, Coutinho, Johnson, Mignolet, Toure, Lucas, Sakho, Skrtel and Agger.

With 'good enough' players at the level of Enrique, Moses, Sterling and Henderson and further good back-up in the form of Allen, Alberto, Aspas and possibly Ibe and for LFC it comes down to 3 things that could make or break our season; injuries, how much our rivals are sucked into other competitions such as the CL (and their own injury crises) and finally whether we get the strong MF player Rodgers is quite obviously after, in January. The title, top 4 and missing out altogether are all viable alternatives based on the above.

You named Allen (a midfielder) and Borini (a striker) - those two were from the Rodgers first season, essentially from a separate pot of gold.
Then you've said Aspas (a striker), Ilori (a defender) and Alberto (a midfielder) - 2 are for the future and Aspas is probably the only disappointment.

So, which position are you trying fulfill to get us into the Champions League quicker? Why choose players across seasons? If this is allowed why not go back more seasons?

Your comment on "we could have got players who add more than that lot" seems to be based on hindsight which if isn't a luxury anyone has.

We're doing well at the moment and on target for Champions League, no need to pick holes at what Rodgers and the LFC has done.

i seriously have no idea what the fuck you are on and what is so hard to understand. Rodgers signed all these players in the last 18 months, why would you not include them all when analysing if our money has been spent well over that period and his reign ? . All i am saying is i don't think we are getting enough from all those players right now and could perhaps be an even better team if that money was spent on other players who were good enough to actually start in the first team .

Belief is a huge factor in winning the league, I don't think many of us are ready to predict we could win the league but we're happy we're showing signs of improvement and some of us might be bold enough to predict a top 4 finish.

Similarly, I don't think too many of our players yet believe 100% that we are serious title contenders which is why the game on Saturday could be one of the biggest league matches we've played in the last 20 years!

IF we can win at The Emirates I think LFC players and supporters might wake up on Sunday morning with the realisation (and the appropriate hangover) that just maybe this season COULD be different. And a "convincing" win could be the springboard to us approaching the tough December matches with relish rather than trepidation.

I agree 100%. A win, or even a strong performance leading to a share of the points will give everyone a bit of belief that we deserve to be at the top end of things.

Most of the teams in this division would be where we are if they had Suarez and Sturridge. The rest of the side is pretty average.

They are both fucking boss and why we've got a great chance tomorrow.

Good side approaching great will be enough. Also: you need a manager with superlative teeth

I'm not having that. Granted, they're there to score goals and goals win us the matches. But minus Gerrard would have some of those goals been set up? Without Mignolet would we have won the games if the keeper had let the shots in? Without the good defenders we've got would some of the opposition waltzed past our defence?
They've all played a part in getting us where we are and deserve credit.

Come on now lads. We've got one of the best defenses in the league (look at the talent on supply), and attack (CASAS), but the midfield is mid table. But that might be enough for our goals for this season (Top 2).

You don't need to be great, you just need to score more goals than the opposition in each game. It matters not how a result is obtained within the rules. Death to chalkboardists and tiki-takarists.

And the ref in your pocket
