Cruyff singles out Holland attacker for praise
Johan Cryuff has talked up Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt ahead of Holland’s World Cup semi-final with Uruguay.
Dirk Kuyt has received a boost ahead of the World Cup semi-final after being praised by Holland’s greatest ever player. Kuyt and his team-mates face Uruguay in the last four of the competition in a match you can see on STV and online in HD from 7pm.
Johan Cruyff, who has been in South Africa watching his country on their run to the semi-finals, singled out Liverpool star Kuyt for praise after his performance against Brazil in the previous round. The iconic Dutchman praised his energy and movement as well as his combination of defensive and attacking awareness throughout the tournament.
"Without belittling anyone, it is still nice to see how Kuyt developed into one of the most valuable players,†said Cruyff. “There were doubts, but he was ready as of the opening game,"
"Look at what he did. He started on the right, then at forward and against Brazil on the left. Not only did he keep Maicon out of the game, he also set up the winner.
"Someone like that is worth his weight in gold."
Kuyt has already scored in the tournament, finishing a move against Denmark in the group stages after Eljero Elia had hit the post. The forward also set up Wesley Sneijder’s winner against Brazil.
In addition to praise from one of the greatest players of all time, Kuyt was also backed by his manager, Bert van Marwijk.
"He always gives everyone a signal how it should be done and his impact and enthusiasm is very infectious," the national team coach said. "He is incredibly important."
Van Marwijk’s side now stand on the verge of equalling Holland’s best ever performance at the World Cup. The nation reached the final of both the 1974 and 1978 competitions with Cruyff playing a central role in the former.
