Dirk Kuyt - Does he have a future with us?

So it seems Roy has settled on a 4-4-2 as his way forward, thus moving Kuyt even further back on the right flank to fill the position of right midfield. It's been patently clear for seasons now that his game is simply not suited to playing on the right of midfield; He lacks pace, first touch, ability to beat a man on the outside and is wholly predictable there making him relatively easy to mark. Of course, he offers high energy (though little pace) and defensive solidity on the flank, attributes suited to a high pressing game (Rafa). For me he also lacks the quality to play alongside Torres up top due to his lack of mobility and oft terrible first touch. Besides, I'd rather see a young improving striker alongside Torres.

So, given NESV's supposed penchant for moving on aging players on large contracts for promising young alternatives, allied to Kuyt's somewhat limited ability on the right of a 4-4-2, is this the right time to be cashing in on the 30 year old Kuyt? It's likely the next 6 months offers us the best chance to get 10-12m for him (Rafa would pay that for a start) and go for a younger, more able alternative. Hazard/Turan/Young would be widely favoured replacements that, for extra cash, would transform our right side (or left), whilst we've been linked with the likes of Marveaux for 2-3m in january.

Yet again, Kuyt appears to be in a bad patch of form (and his bad patches are awful). He tends to divide opinion amongst fans but no-one can argue that he hasn't given his all for this club over the years and contributed to our success. One could also say he's somewhat emblematic of Rafa's reign in being the archetypal industry over finesse player.

Time for Dirk to move on?

He was excellent against Chelsea and had a lovely assist to Torres. Yeah he was poor against Villa but he's human. I wouldn't entertain selling Dirk unless we we're offered money we couldn't refuse.

I'm a big Dirk Kuyt fan but i'm well aware of his ruts. I have no problem with rotating him with Maxi, Cole, Babel on the wings and even help out up top if needed.

He's one of the few potential matchwinners in our squad. It would be madness to move him on at this stage.

He's a mediocre winger and an average striker. His effort masks these issues and people love his heart. He'd be a good backup. shouldn't be anything more.

Fair enough, but wouldn't you prefer an exciting (and improving) Hazard/Turan/Young on the right flank? For the amount we could get for Kuyt (plus some more), I think we could do better.

Wait a year or so and his value will start to decline sharply as opposed to any of the above.

I pretty much entirely agree with the initial post, but the problem is who will offer us ten million plus for Dirk?

There are players I would much rather move on than Dirk Kuyt, but there is some logic in selling him now.

I don't know if Rafa has the power on the influence to buy Dirk, particularly his performance at the moment.

Yep, I doubt we would get a fee that would make selling Dirk sensible. Rafa would probably be the only possibility, but I wonder if Moratti is willing to trust him in transfer market.

Yeah i'd like an exciting winger, who wouldn't. I still rate Dirk Kuyt and would be happy with him rotating on the right and up top.

I think we need to keep him unless we get 10 m+ offer.

a) he's shit as a RW in the 4-4-2 BUT he's the 2nd best striker on our team. So he needs to be Torres's partner if Roy finds someone for the RW spot
b) he's still a very capable 'RW' in the 4-2-3-1 formation

Mediocre? Average?

I wouldn't associate any of these buzz words with Dirk.

I wouldn't entertain selling him for anything other than an inflated fee either.

Im sorry but criticizing someone who's playing out of position and giving 200% every match is harsh, doing so when he's playing in a totally new system in an underperforming team when he's had a niggling injury for most of the season seems even more OTT#

Jog on Dirk haters!

surely we could fairly easily get £10m for kuyt, couldn't we? am i being naive? he's an established international, recently played in a world cup final, versatile etc. christ, even carlton cole is attracting those kind of bids these days.

whatever, if we got such an offer (personally i'd be looking more for £12m or so) and we also bought quality out wide and up front, then i'd be in favour of moving him on.

If we got a good offer for him, I'd sell. That seems unlikely now however as Rafa's word might not carry much weight at Inter any more.

What bothers me with Kuyt is his passing. He squanders to many attacks IMO.
But then again, he scores when you least expect it.

Everyone was complaining about Sissoko's passing but this Kuyt thing has gone unnoticed.

If i made a list of players who I would like to be sold, Dirk Kuyt will not be in the top ten of that list.

We need to buy in his position, before we sell.

We could have Turan and Marveaux for Kuyt + 5m or so. I'd say that would represent a huge upgrade.

NEVAHHHH

I like Dirk but he isnt a RW and so is totally unsuited to our current formation. There's players I'd get rid of before Kuyt though.

Indeed so.
I never have been his biggest fan, but I admire his heart and attitude.
I would not be looking to be moving him on, if not for any other reason than he should be a decent squad player, and currently the squad is too thin.

regards

Like it or not he's one of our most senior players in an average squad.

He's got heaps of experience and his attitude is 2nd to none.

For all his faults he's not worth moving on for the price we would get (Interwithstanding)

So keep him.
