Deschamps: I turned down Liverpool

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps turned down an offer to manage Liverpool before Roy Hodgson took over at the Premier League club in July, the Frenchman said

Deschamps, returning to his former club Chelsea ahead of Tuesday's Group F Champions League clash, said he was flattered to have been approached but ultimately decided he could not walk out on his Ligue 1 employers.
"I am very proud that a club of the standing of Liverpool showed interest in me this summer," he told a news conference at Stamford Bridge.
"But, to be fair, it wasn't good timing. I had just started pre-season training with Marseille and I don't think the fans or the club officials would have been very pleased if after two days back I was looking to join another club.
"We (Deschamps and Liverpool) had a long meeting," he added, when asked how serious the offer was.
Deschamps spent the 1999-2000 season with Chelsea, winning the FA Cup with the west Londoners in the last FA Cup final at the old Wembley Stadium, and also played under their current coach Carlo Ancelotti in his time at Juventus in Italy.
Returning to Stamford Bridge as an opponent, Deschamps contemplated the impressive changes at the club since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich took over and shrugged off their inability so far to lift Europe's premier trophy.
"It's totally different to when I was here," he said.
"They've built another stand at the ground here, so it's really in another dimension to the Chelsea I used to know.
"I have very good memories. What I do remember is that we played in front of a full stadium every week and the fans were always right behind you, no matter what happened the fans would get behind the side."
Chelsea have lost their last two matches and will be without suspended striker Didier Drogba, a former Marseille player, for Tuesday's match but Deschamps shrugged off any suggestion that the English champions would be weaker for it.
"It's just one option less for Ancelotti," he said.
Chelsea will also be without Frank Lampard and forward Salomon Kalou but Deschamps did not think that would make much difference to the strength of the side Ancelotti fields.
"They have a big squad and lots of experience but a match like this is won on the little details, and I hope we win it."

Its a shame he turned us down, he would be a decent manager for us. Get Pellegrini or Hiddink in.

A shame, he was my preferred choice

One of two or three candidates for me as well.

Not the safest bet but after having won a strong Ligue 1 with Marseille after their 20-year slump, much like what we're waiting for evidently, it would be rather daft not to at least consider him as an option as he even knows the Premier League from the inside out having played for Chelsea.

A massive player back in his Juve days and I'd be delighted to see him at the helm at Anfield one day.

There was some talk of Juve taking Deschamps back and I gather Juve fans by and large would have been delighted.

New owners are almost certainly going to want their own man in anyway, so who knows whom we might get then?

Anyone but Hodgson.

To be perfectly honest Roy was second only to Kenny if we had to go English in my opinion.

I still believe. A little.

English manager has to put their hand in the air and ask themselves why they are falling behind. They are not capable of managing their own national team and their managers hardly win anything. McClaren pulled a league title in Holland, and thats about it.

Haha. I certainly believe there is much more of a manager in Stevie G than in Carra. There are enough Steve Bruces around isnt it??

I beg to differ really. But mostly because I'm not sure Gerrard's got it in him. He's never really struck me as a 'captain' whereas I reckon Carra is much more suited in that role.

Time will tell.

Gerrard as a manager?!

Holy fuck no. For so many reasons.

Carra seemingly has all the right attributes, but only time will tell. Stevie, no. Just no.

If you'd watched the two of them play football over the last 10 years you'd have your answer.

So what?? A great player doesn't always make a great manager.

Well. If Roy actually put his hands up instead of hiding his face in them he could actually see what happened on the pitch and correct them? 😀

Carra hands out the right mix of encouragement and bollocking, and is known to be a total football nut off the pitch as well, forever talking and thinking about the game. Stevie's matured a lot in the last year or two but still leaves a lot of the vocal stuff to Carra, and doesn't have anything like the off-field obsession with football that Carra has. Maybe he hasn't had to, because he'so phenomenally talented that he doesn't need to think about the game as much but, whatever the reason for the difference between them, there's no doubt in my mind that out of the two of them it's Carra who's a manager-in-waiting.

That's what I said ;D

But zlatan doesnt really like Carragher, so it's not a surprising comment from him.
