Just came across this very interesting story. Don't know if you've heard of it but it's hilarious.
It's a 1994 game between Grenada and Barbados as the second leg of a semi-final of the Shell Carribean Cup. Barbados had to win the game by two goals to proceed to the finals. The rules of the competition strangely stated that in case of a tie, games would go extra-time and a goal scored in extra time would count as two goals.
Barbados lead the game 2-0 until the final few minutes when Grenada made it 2-1. Barbados thus faced elimination with only a few minutes remaining. They thus decided to score an own goal to make it 2-2 and send the game to extra-time to give themselves a chance of going to the final as a goal in extra-time would give them the two goal difference needed (as it counted for two goals). Talk of quick thinking. ;D
Apparently, however, seeing this, Grenada also attempted to score an own goal in the last minute to lose the game 3-2 (which would have seen them go through) but they were unable to do so as the Barbados players defended the Grenada goal.
Here's a Youtube video.
