We didn't had the money to sign both Kuyt and Aguero. Our board didn't want to pay very high wages to a young talent like Aguero so we signed Kuyt instead.

Was it not Kuyt and Dani Alves he wanted that summer but we had to settle for Kuyt and Jermaine Pennant instead because we didnt have the cash for both?

I thought we were after Aguero when he was relatively unknown for £16-18m and didn't go through with it.

I'm not sure you should be questioning the incredible source of LFC-based knowledge that Arn provides. His unflinching expose on the reign of Hicks and Gillette was a real eye-opener for me. It's rather embarrassing that we have to rely on a foreign madman to show us the truth.

It's the conspiracy-theory edge to everything, that wins it every time for me.

Simao:graham::graham::graham:

How the fuck he never ended up here is beyond me but is something I'm glad of in retrospect despite his exotic name etc

Ona side note Rafa's actual team wasnt half bad In 08/09 either ! That midfield .....

No. We wanted Alves for £8m, Sevilla wanted £10m, we upped our bid to £10m but Sevilla now wanted £12m, we upped our bid to £12m, Sevilla now wanted £16m. We lost interest after that.

We wanted Aguero before he moved to Atletico so the answer to that question is yes.

I think speaking about transfers and potential transfers in such definitive terms is a bit flimsy at best @Arn

Not if you believe what Rafa, Balague, Barrett, Reade said about it. When all of them say the same thing then it is difficult not to believe them.

Nothing is definitive when recruiters / agents / stereotypically thick footballers and millions of pounds are involved .

There's also the old adage of not believing everything you read , more so when three of your four reliable sources are ultimately journalists who at various periods have had more than good enough reason to paint the club in an overly good light

No it wasn't.

Rafa wanted Aguero, Kuyt and Alves. Mr Silver spoon loaned the club the money so we could sign Kuyt for £10m.
Maybe Mr Spoon just didn't have the beans

Danny Murphy was quoted on here at the time as saying that we actually reached agreement with Sevilla on the fee for Alves, and even their chairman said at the time that a deal was imminent. According to Zidanny the deal was scuppered when our board said we wanted to pay by instalments and Sevilla wouldn't accept that.
