Yeah awful nickname I knows.
But I genuinely hate the cunt.
A 20 million Danny Wilson.
Worse thing about it the prick thinks he's gods gift.
Discuss and someone come up with a better name for the prick.

Bolasie single-handedly bossed our entire backline. Just like Berahino, Ibangawhore, George Boyd, Sakho and many more. Some of whom I have no idea who they are until they start playing like Messi when playing against us.

Well, I'm going to stick up for Lovren a bit here. IMO this thread's a bit oddly timed, because in the last few weeks he's (finally) got a grip and started to put in some decent performances. Pretty much the whole lot played like drains yesterday so there's not a lot of point basing any judgments on it.

Agreed. Our 3 back line also saw Lovren getting dragged out of position and getting set up one on one out on the wings. Didnt suit him at all.
Our worst defensive performance in quite a while came when we played 3 at the back again.
Lovren wasnt worth his fee but has been very good the last 5-6 games.

Yesterday just about everyone were shite.

I don't know for the life of me why he's persisted with the 3 at the back. Emre Can has been struggling for weeks , Moreno hasn't got a clue of where he's supposed to be and consequently manages to always be in the wrong position and Lovren looks horribly exposed when has to cover for moreno by going out wide. Added to that he played Gerrard in defensive midfield when we all know he can't do that job effectively. It's like rodgers just pressed 'Sim Match' on FIFA because he couldn't be arsed playing the game.

Finally..

He nearly had me sold.. I thought he had turned the corner but yesterday he was woeful.

Which now makes me think it's not so much the player at fault ... It could be the manager..

The way the back 3 where playing yesterday was Sunday league esq at times.. Acting on the managers instructions? ... or lack of...

Running back facing and towards the goal...

Let face it whoever we stick at the back or defence has been far from decent

He has had 3 years to sort it out and we are no better to show for it..

We lack a leader at the back.. Despite his flaws.. Agger did have that...

Yeah, Rodgers definitely said go out there and try to look like a Sunday league player.

That explains it

Lovren never looked settled in the back 3. His recent improvement came from reverting to 4 at the back.

He's been poor, but the system added to it

Yeah, the more you protect him the better he looks.

Thats a problem though
A massive problem when we haven't got a DM worth a damn

Or a fullback who can give him some form of help

Nah, I think most centre backs would struggle a bit with our defensive set up.

Not much protection from midfield, a goalkeeper that was out of sync for 6 months, 3 out 4 defenders (at times) signed this season, Glen Johnson, converting to 3 at the back.

There are loads of excuses or explanations to why our new defenders have struggled. Lovren was very good for Soton and has looked much better the last 5-6 games.

We're obviously going to revert to a back 4 and sign a few new midfielders.
Hopefully Lovren will continue to improve next season. Same goes for Moreno.

He's not going to improve.

He had one season of football in his entire career where he looked capable, because the team was set up with two good Dms and a decent defensive full back in Clyne.

They were the reasons he looked decent, but true to form we decided he was a 20m player only to find out he's not very good when your team isn't set up to cover for him.

Clyne is a very attacking rightback. Lovren played at left CB for Southampton. Not sure why Rosco is mentioning Clyne really.

Lovren didnt play next to Clyne. He had Shaw next to him. Who was very attacking and not to good defensively.

We'll see if he improves or not,

What Southampton did was take an average player, put him in a unit that will make him look better than he is and then flog him for a hefty fee the minute some idiot came waving money at them.

Thats the sign of a smart club.

You make it up while you go dont you?

Nothing wrong in what he said. Lovren played in a defensively organized Southampton who often played with Schneiderlein and Wanyama giving additional protection to their back four. I would say the system had a lot to contribute to Lovren's success. Our defenders dont get that protection. If Lovren moves to a Rafa or Mourinho team, he will immediately look much better.

I think a lot to do with how he plays is how the manager sets up the Team..

Thats the point though isnt it. It isnt only down to Lovren imho. Its down to how we set up. I mentioned all this earlier in the thread.
Most centre backs we sign would struggle given how exposed our defence is with Rodgers set up.
We can keep throwing money at the "problem" and replace Lovren with another centre back but I bet it wouldnt solve much without us changing our defensive shape and set up.

As for the Soton. They played a back four with 2 midfielders infront of them. Lovren played LCB with Shaw on his left. A very attacking left back who isnt the strongest defensively or position wise.
Its not like they defended or set up like Stoke but they were clearly instructed and coached on how to defend.
We just look unorganized and all over the place. That isnt down to the players.

When Rodgers changed the set up we looked much more comfortable and defended better.
Changing it back to a 3 man defence with Gerrard infront of the defence once again left us horribly exposed.

I remember saying this about a certain player 😉

Of course, the way we're set up affects him. Which is why it boggles the mind we paid £20 million for him in the first place. Poor scouting and management.
