Liverpool are ready to commit massive funds to take on Manchester United in the race to land the next Brazilian superstar.

Centre-half Dede has been identified as the man the Samba nation will build their team on for the World Cup they are hosting in 2014.

And his club, Vasco da Gama, have confirmed this week he WILL be sold in the summer.

The club from Rio have hit massive financial problems after being pursued by federal tax authorities for unpaid debts, and they have admitted they will be forced to sell to the highest bidder to stave off the threat of liquidation.

That means attempting to get an auction going to realise an asking price of around £15million, with the likes of Liverpool, United, Juventus and Benfica all making enquiries about the 24-year-old.

The Anfield club believe they have stolen a march on their rivals after targeting the 6ft 3in stopper over the past 12 months, and establishing a relationship with the private investment group that owns 55 per cent of the player.

Dede - full name Anderson Vital da Silva - fits the Liverpool profile perfectly, given he is a young international who promises much for the future.

And with boss Brendan Rodgers keen to land at least TWO centre-halves in the summer, they will commit big money to fighting off champions-elect United.

Speaking this week, Vasco director general Cristiano Koehler confirmed a decision has been taken to allow Dede to leave, given the debts the club must address to avoid the threat of bankruptcy.

“We can’t mislead the fans, we will find it very difficult to hold on to Dede because the club needs the resources, and at some point it will happen - by the middle of the year,” the official explained.

“The desire of all is that he stays, but we have to prioritise the payment of wages, taxes and federal agreements, so it is inevitable we will have to sell - so it is possible, in the middle of the year when the sale goes through, we can use the money to restructure the club and make it safe.

“The player is ambitious and he also wants to experience better opportunities with better pay, and the partners in his ownership want to make the agreement now to develop their investment.

"We have a balance sheet we must meet, and we can’t hide the fact.”

Dede, part of the Brazil squad that will play Italy in a friendly on Friday night and Russia next week, has been described as the future of the national side after emerging with Vasco in the past two years.

The defender has won six caps in the past few months, and has been courted by most of Brazil’s top clubs, with his own domestic side struggling to pay their players’ wages as well as that tax bill.

A deal to sell him to Corinthians fell through in January, and another interested club is Fluminese, whose coach Abel Braga admitted an approach for a player he said is “absurdly talented and will certainly be one of Brazil’s stars at the 2014 World Cup”.

But with Vasco facing such daunting debts, they would prefer to sell the defender on the international market, in an attempt to tease the price as high as £15m - a fee none of their domestic rivals would pay.

The situation is complicated by the fact that, like many South American internationals, Dede is part owed by an investment group who bought a stake in him as a youngster.

Vasco only hold 45% of the player’s registration, with another 45% held by the DIS Group - a subsidiary of a Brazilian supermarket chain - and 10% held by the Ability investment group.

Liverpool have made in-roads in their relationship with his investors after watching Dede over the past year.

They also have another card to play, in that they already have two Brazilians in the squad in Lucas Leiva and Philippe Coutinho.

United, of course, have the Da Silva brothers, Rafael and Fabio - who hail from the same area of Rio de Janeiro as Dede - but the player may decide he will have a more immediate first-team opportunity at Liverpool, given the looming retirement of Jamie Carragher.

On a sidenote, their manager just got sacked today.

Vasco sacked manager Gaúcho following the 0-2 defeat to Nova Iguaçu for the second turn of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship.

Gaúcho was appointed as Vasco's manager in November, but he failed to achieve impressive results.

The announcement was made by executive director René Simões shortly after the game, which was Vasco's third defeat in a row in the competition.

If Brazil wants to build their defence around him, he's probably alright.
Sounds like just the player we need.

I'd be surprised if we do get him though. The top Italian clubs have also been persistently linked.

Nickname: Dedeckenbauer. Known for his exceptional tackling and heading skills.
Sounds to good to be true. Dont underestimate Benfica either getting him.

Doubt we will get him but he is exactly the sort of defender we need, tall strong quick, good in the air and comfortable on the ball. If we can get him we should

Wasn't Coates linked with some Brazillian clubs in the Jan window? Any chance of a swap deal plus cash for Dede?

In many interviews, Dedé has confessed his admiration for former-Brazil defender Junior Baiano and has stated that he modelled his game on the 41-year-old Flamengo idol, still playing at Miami FC until just two years ago. Baiano was a much underrated defender for his time, but is now viewed with much greater affection by Brazilian football observers given the team of the 1990′s great success in international competitions. The similarities with Dedé are clear.

The Vasco man is tall and elegant, not blessed with blinding pace, but with an outstanding understanding of the game. For such a young defender, this ability to reading the game and anticipate the potential threat, combined with considerable composure when faced with highly talented opponents is remarkable – Dedé has twice been credited with nullifying Neymar. Over the past twelve to eighteen months, the development of these skills has been clear for all to see and now, it is rare that Dedé is at fault for moments of defensive panic.

Another feature of Dedé’s game is his impressive aerial ability. Standing at 6’4” (193cm) tall, he has an obvious height advantage over many opponents, but combined with an impressive leap and good technique, it can be a useful weapon and Dedé has already troubled the scorers nine times in 2011 alone.

There is a propensity for tall players to be clumsy and this was evident early in the Vasco man’s career. However, with the experience he has gained and his impressive all-round attributes, Dedé has recovered from these early set-backs to become a model of consistency.

“There are many annoying defenders out there, but the most annoying [to play against] is Dedé. He is the best defender in Brazil.” - Neymar, Nov 2011

1) Dede started his football schooling with the Volta Redonda academy and was promoted to the first team in 2008. After 100 games and 13 goals with the side, he signed for Vasco da Gama in 2009.

2) Dede experienced a tough time during his early days at Vasco and found it so difficult to break into the team that it was rumoured he would be transferred at the end of the 2009-10 season. He finally got his break in a match against Vitoria after Vasco were hit with an injury crisis. Dede played so well in the game that the club offered him a contract extension and a permanent position in the starting line-up.

3) In 2011 Dede's performances won him the award of the best right-sided central defender in the Campeonato Cariocao, the state league of Rio.

4) In November 2011, Dede completed his 100th game for Vasco da Gama, scoring two goals and assisting another, as well as winning man of the match.

5) Dede has picked up a number of nicknames during his time at Vasco, including 'the Myth', 'Dedeckenbauer' and 'Dedelicious'!

There are reports Milan face competition from Chelsea in their bid for Vasco da Gama defender Dede.

According to SportMediaset, the Rossoneri have been in negotiations for the past three weeks.

However, Chelsea are intercepting these talks with an offer of their own thought to be worth €10m.

Milan reacted to this by raising their own proposal to €12m, but Vasco’s price-tag is even higher and they are eager to keep the bidding war going.

“Keeping hold of Dede is really very difficult,” Vasco da Gama director Cristiano Koehler confessed.

“We would all like to have him here with us next year, but he wants to take steps forward in his career and also find better deals in economic terms.

“We will deal with the situation, but without taking our fans for a ride. It’s true, Dede could leave.”

Dede is a 24-year-old full international centre-back and sweeper who in Brazil has been compared with Franz Beckenbauer.

His contract with Vasco runs until December 2014.

A brazilian CB who can really defend? Surely not?

That would be like a Brazilian CM who had zero flair at the club.............
