Day 1 in Austin

Yeah, ATX is really nice, but the long term outlook is terrible. There's no space for real expansion of the infrastructure, and that's only going to continue to get worse with all the people now moving here. The general culture is great, but I probably wouldn't want to work here after graduating.

I used to live in the San Diego area though, it's amazing that you can get literally double the house here in Austin compared to the California markets. But between earning a bit more, and having much better beaches on the west coast, it's alright, living costs be damned.

You should definitely post more for someone who's been around for 3+ years though!

Have you fellas ever been to The Alamo Drafthouse? I've always wanted to go there. Actually Austin is one of my top wannabe places to visit in U.S.

Haha yeah you are right, I've been quite the serial lurker but I'll definitely try to contribute more. And r.e. Austin, I moved here for school from Houston and never wanna leave, it is definitely gonna become (and already is in some ways i.e. I-35) extremely overcrowded.

The biggest issue I have with Houston is the climate, it's just so damn humid.

Love going to Minute Maid there though, that's a great ballpark. Plus it's never crowded.

There's one that opened up just a few minutes from my place actually(literally just over a mile), but I'm personally not huge on seeing movies in theatres. Been there a couple times though, and it's a great spot.

A lot of my buddies are really into film though, and go to artsy/esoteric stuff all the time. It's one of their favorite places to go, granted it is a bit pricy compared to other theatres.

How many years before it gets unbearable you think? We wee looking to move to austin but Dallas seems like it could be next!

I mean if you really want to live in Austin, it's definitely going to be bearable. There's a lot of aspects that really appeal to groups of people, and it's never going to be that awful.

The issue is that the freeway/roads system was designed for a much smaller city, and they didn't really account for space to expand. So you end up with a lot of freeways lacking the number of the lanes you need. But there are a ton of positives to living here, and for a lot of people they will easily outweigh the negatives.

I'll be moving to the Dallas area for a Fall semester Co-Op in a few weeks, and I'm pretty excited about figuring out that area. Granted I'll be around an hour from the city, but there's a ton to do there as well.

I want to go to the Austin PsychFest.

Boss music out of Austin.

I'll probably go to FunFunFun Fest this year, but there are so many great music festivals. ACL has never really been my speed though, especially for the cost of admission, and I've always seemingly been busy during SXSW.

I've heard great things about Spiderhouse here though, and The Mohawk is a fantastic venue.

I've been a couple years while I've been at school - just an all around amazing festival!

@Whirly Congrats with the coop, I'm assuming you are an Engineer? Dallas is a fine city but I'm a little biased being from Houston - wouldn't ever wanna live there 😛

@Red Astaire I frequent the draft house pretty often - its a bit pricey for a movie but the presentation is great and they always have some great beers on tap. The most unique thing they do besides have great food/drink is have custom funny previews that are related to the movie you are about to watch (for example Django Unchained would have shorts/youtube clips etc that made fun of spaghetti westerns or random humorous anecdotes of the like). The no tolerance cell phone/talking policy is great as well.

Thanks, and yeah I am an Engineer.

The only drawback with Houston is the humidity. I imagine those living there acclimate to it, but it's pretty terrible compared to Austin's climate.

No - absolutely. I hadn't gone back home in like 15 months and when I did it felt like a sauna. Doesn't get snow like Dallas can so I suppose you have to pick your poison.

Yeah, I live in South Austin when I'm not at school at A&M. Assuming you go to UT though by the name.

@Karl Hungus is up north, in the Round Rock area I think as well.

I grew up in Elgin, I live in South Austin now, off of Riverside Dr.

And I could tell those pictures were not in Austin right away, not nearly enough sweat.

I'll be an austin-ite within a year. Lakeway most likely...

Anyways got some tickets to the game mañana. Looking forward to it, driving up and back tommorow...

hold on , hold on ...so you are telling me texas is actually pretty cool and not just full of gun toting bible bashers ?

Lakeway is a fair ways out, especially if you're going to work in the city. Supposed to be a nice area though, so it could be well worth it. Apparently the demographics are around 93% white, which is quite high even for Texas.

Lakeway - pretty affluent, about 30-45 min away from downtown. Great golf courses though if you are into that sorta thing.

Really? Wow, must take a second look at that. I thought it was just another decent neighborhood. Just looking to land somewhere with good schools for the kids. I thought the other neighborhood west lake hills was the ritzy one?

Essentially West Austin is the nice part of town, Westlake is ritzy. The further East you go, like where I live, the worse you get.

Pretty much.

I'd suggest taking a serious look at Shady Hollow, Circle C, and that sort of area. South of 290, West of I-35.

You get access to a lot more of what Austin has to offer by living there, without having to deal with as much of the craziness. And the pricing is quite reasonable, and the schools are typically very good too.
