No surprise there, but thanks for the memories, Danny.

Murphy calls it quits! Ex-Liverpool, Fulham and Spurs midfielder brings curtain down on 20 year career

Danny Murphy has announced his retirement from football after leaving Blackburn at the end of last season.

The former Crewe, Liverpool, Charlton, Tottenham and Fulham midfielder made more than 600 club appearances and won nine caps for England during his 20 year career.

Murphy left Blackburn at the end of last season and has decided to call time on a career in which he won the FA Cup, two League Cups and the UEFA Cup during his time at Liverpool, and was a key part of the Fulham side that reached the Europa League final in 2010 and scored the goal that kept the west London side in the Premier League two years earlier.

Staring out: Murphy began his career under Dario Gradi at Crewe

Since the end of last season, Murphy has been working in the media as a pundit on Match of the Day and guest presenter on talkSPORT.

He told talkSPORT: 'There have been some press reports about whether I’m still playing or available but I decided a little while ago I would retire, I just didn’t make it official.

Kop idol: Murphy won silverware during his time at Liverpool

'So now I’m officially retiring because I’m sick of having conversations about it and almost stringing people along. I decided three or four weeks ago I was done, and this [the Colin Murray show on talkSPORT] is the best place to do it.

'This is me, 20 years, I’m done. I’ve had a wonderful career and can look back on it with fondness.'

Loved Spud but he was just short of being a top class midfielder.
Great penalty taker and a peach of a right foot when on form but just lacked a bit of presence in midfield at times.
Happy retirement Spud now just don't go slagging us on Match of the Day.

Him giving the ball away pissed me off no end but he was a great penalty taker, and who can forget his free kick against the Mancs!
He's had a good career.

Spud had some great moments for us. He's had a really good career.

Three winners at Old Trafford in four seasons between 2000 and 2004. Will be fondly remembered by me and many others for that.

One of my favorite LFC goals that. From Gerrards pass to Murphy's finish - simple, beautiful, elegant, brilliant and lethal - running short of adjectives here 🙂

Danny Murphy was the kind of player who causes endless arguments on forums as to whether he is rubbish or a midfield genius.

He did have some wonderful skills, but I felt that he wanted too much time on the ball and was often the cause of our attacks being snuffed out. On balance I wasn't disappointed when he left us.

We were so good that half-season with Nico Anelka leading the line. If only GH had kept Nico instead of signing Spit the Dog, and had let things run on the way they had been going.

As for Zidanny himself - for sure he was no superstar, but we've had plenty worse since. Danny Murphy YNWA.

I grew up almost idolising Murphy due to those winners against the Mancs! Being from Surrey, those games against Utd are the big ones for me each season (as all of my mates are Utd fans) so winning quite a few during a short spell (when I was early teens) was awesome.

Thanks for the memories Spud!

I always knew deep down that he wasn't really as good as we said he was.

but I loved him anyway.
Just loved to see his name on the team list.

Hate to go against the grain of slagging him off as being 'not top class'. He was. Every player gives the ball away. He gave us great value for money, never caused us a moments problem, worked hard, read the game well, scored important goals and was a vital component of Ged's team. He also won more trophies with us than loads of more high profile players ever managed.
And I once bought him a pint of blackcurrant and soda in the bar at Chester City. So there.

I don't really think anyone's slagging him off TBH. Saying he wasn't quite top drawer is rather different. But hey - the man was a good professional, versatile and intelligent, and reached a high enough standard to play for Liverpool Football Club, which makes him better than a fraction of a percent of the population. I think he could make a good manager too.

I think that may be my favourite goal of all time. As well as your description, the look of sheer devastation on Keane's face when it went in is priceless.

Good luck in the future Danny.

Those goals against Man U stand out. Decent player imo, was better than some of his replacements but in the end his performances were a bit up and down. Just not consistent enough.

Arse sniffer.

I liked him. I think us on Koptalk used to call him 'Spud' - That might have been what everyone called him though. He certainly divided opinion though. Those goals against Mancs were fantastic as well.

I can't remember who it was that told me (A poster maybe) but someone once regaled a story about 'Spud' putting a £1000 behind a bar in Chester after one of those games against the Mancs that he scored in - Very sound of him.

Good luck!

He was a favourite of mine not least because I watched a fair bit of Crewe around the time he came through - i was made up when he got the move (for 750k?) to Liverpool.

He got better with age and I always kind of hoped he might turn out another Gary Mac (he was, of sorts, for Fulham). Good pro with a good footballing brain and a solid squaddie for us.

He seems to know his football too and is about to finish his coaching badges. He'll turn out a decent manager one day and Rodgers could do worse than get him involved at Anfield (though he'll likely take the lower league route).

Best of luck Spud.

A different sort of player, but the way he divided fans despite being an enigmatic player capable of moments of magic, especially in big games, was very similar to Garcia. Even Kuyt.

I always liked Spud and wished he'd stuck around for Rafa's first season.

I remember that very clearly - Rafa spoke out about what a great pre season Spud had and then sold him. It seemed a bit bizarre at the time.

Sold to make way for Alonso?

I always liked him but he from what I remember he never really seemed to stay in the team, but then my memory is shit.

It's a bit sad considering that we had Biscan and Diao in the team or around the team.

Some great memories of Murphy in a Liverpool shirt.

As clichéd as it is he was technically very good. Great first touch and had an eye for a pass and goal.
He did struggle for pace and sometimes let games pass him by. Bit of a confidence player.

He always comes across as a true Red!
