Point still stands.
Nah. He didnt play the man, he played the ball. He didnt attempt to touch Alves he attempted to win the ball. He won the ball, didnt touch the man.
Shite decision.
I'll leave it at that though, as i dont really think you are ever going to see it that way.
But you're (deliberatly maybe?) leaving out a crucial piece of the debate Oncy.
He didn't touch him because Alves was quick enough to get his leg out of the way before Pepe snapped the fucking thing in two.
What should Alves have done, left his leg there and takend the 'tackle' so the referee could see the actual damage Pepe would have inflicted with his lunge?
It was reckless.
So it was minimum yellow card? and a 'harsh red' (as I think most people would agree) that was given probably due to Alves' reaction?
Well I've seen similar tackles receive reds and yellows as I'm sure we all have. So it's arguable really.
But to defend it's recklessness with "he didn't touch him" is pointless.
Yeah the slowmo only confirms it was a stupid, dangerous challenge, worthy of at least a yellow. Alves is obviously a cheating fuck, but the referee's decision is understandable. Pepe is a ducking stupid lummox, and was a cert to fall prey to a sending off like this against Barca sooner or later with their capacity to make any challenge look nightmarish.
