Ok so he's about to sign for Dortmund. You're citeh. How to you persuade him to come to you?
Do you a) do nothing and lose him
Or b) offer a higher fee so his club encourage him to sign for you and offer him more money to him to entice him too?
 
I'd blow a load on a top quality CM, but the issue is getting them to play for us if we don't hit top four.
If the rumours are correct about a big summer spend, that's great on paper, but not always easy to achieve.

My thoughts too.

It's a tricky one because I actually think the midfielders we have are good players but they're all a little too alike and prone to headless chicken displays.

In an ideal world I'd like to get a couple of players that can really read the game and help us dictate the pace a bit better. We're far too prone to losing our heads be it through over-excitedly attacking or haplessly trying to press some jumped up relegation fodder into surrender.

What does Chelsea, Spurs and Man C have that we don't ?
A decent defensive midfielder.
That's the first thing Klopp should be looking for. I'm all for collective defending and chasing down opponents but we fucking need one player in midfield that can protect the back line.
Hendo can't do it and neither can Emre. At least not consistently.

I don't think it was the midfielders who lost their heads, generally (except for Can who definitely did on a few occasions). Plus things like controlling the tempo come with experience and players who have a bit of football intelligence about them (as Hendo and Wijnaldum definitely do, and the young Emre as well) will get better at it the more they play together. Don't forget this was the first season for Hendo at the new position and first for Wijnaldum in this team and they didn't do too badly.

At this point I'm not sure how much difference would buying someone like Paredes make; I doubt it would be much of an improvement, honestly. I would, however, like to buy one more physical CM who can take the ball forward battering ram style and with a lot of energy and desire to fight for the ball. Someone like Bakayoko or possibly Naby Keita, Spurs' Dembele, Franck Kessie. Or perhaps we already have a player like that in Ejaria or Grujic.

That's simply laughable if it were true, but it won't be the first time we've overpaid for big fish small pond kind of player.
 
who knows if it's true or not, but if it were, it would be great to know that we mean business and are hell bent on getting our targets.
 
Why would Dortmund announce they had reached an agreement to sign a player, when it wasn't true?

For avoidance of doubt, Gladbach also confirmed it. He's going to Dortmund, end of.
 
Yup, even Sportbild fixed their headline that attributed to false hope brought unto by the Sportwitness article above.

I don't disagree that experience helps but there are some players that just have that game intelligence from an early age and can help guide their team-mates.

The thing I hate seeing in particular is seeing us put in loads of effort with little to show for it. We saw it more under Rodgers than we have under Klopp (who refocused the pressing game) but it's still very much a feature in certain games as we all know. There are just times where we seemingly don't quite know how to get it together - as a team - and we just run about a lot.

Perhaps Henderson or Can might mature over coming years and help in this experience but I think we need to buy.
