Crouch Hat trick

Status
Not open for further replies.
I saw Alonso in an interview on the television and he was asked 'who is the most skillful player in the squad?', and he declaired 'Babel' which surpised me no ends!

When players are asked stuff like that you often get surprising responses.
Smicer was often praised by his team mates as one of the best players in the squad, and I even remember hearing someone (I can't remember who) when asked who the best player in training was, answering that it was Salif Diao!

Crouch was, and is, a good striker and is well worth a spot in our squad.

It was a shame, although understandable, that he wanted more than an impact substitute role.

thread going off at a tangent but I thought smicer was no where near as bad as some people made out. didn't he get 17 assists in one season? second only to beckham if I recall correctly.

If Babel had scored a hatrick in similar circumstances on Tuesday
Sorry Vlad, that's not right. No matter what Babel seems to do (be it game winning goals or assists), people always complain about him ... His shortcomings are obvious but he could score a hat trick to beat the Mancs in the Champions League final and people would complain, "He didn't look interested" and "Where's his left peg?"
I think differently.

wiz I think we can both agree it's more likely that babel wont succeed now than will and this is coming from argubly babel's biggest fan.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Smicer but he used to fade in and out of games. And the fact that you have to defend him by saying that he was "no where near as bad as some people made out" in itself suggests that him being declared one of our best players is something of a surprise!

I agree with that. And it's a bit ironic that he usually has the same role now at Spurs.

I thought smicer got a rough ride whilst he was here. I was sooo pleased that of all the 'could be' heroes of instanbul he turned out to be one of them.

I think two things ...

1) Had Babel gone to Arsenal, it would be a different story probably
2) Babel, when he does leave us (and he will unfortunately because he won't succeed here), can still be a success elsewhere ...

Babel can still succeed but only if played on the right. It's so obvious.

EDIT: And grows a set of balls

I have the 'Babel to Arsenal' discussion with the lads from time to time and the fact is (as far as I can see) that he would have been given more time to shine in his favoured position. I think he would be fucking lethal at this stage had Wenger got him 2 years ago.

But he didn't, and we're stuck with him. Great.

Get the fuck off it Fark. If anyone else had posted that you'd have said nothing. Crouch's finishing is fantastic at times. Think of his two bicycles kicks, his goals home and away to West Ham in 2006-2007 and his strike away to Arsenal in 2008...all really well taken.
This was my point, and my only point, and it applies to your post as well: Every striker that is even decent will have finishing that "at times" is brilliant, otherwise they'd never be scoring any fucking goals. Crouch is not a clinical or brilliant finisher. I quite liked crouch, and I think he's a good player, but I find it bizarre to describe something that is a quantum function (either he does score, or he doesn't score) as brilliant, by considering those periods of time when he is scoring. It's like saying "I make fantastic amounts of money betting the horses... at times". Are you up or are you down net? Crouch can be unplayable at times, and he'd be very useful to have around in certain games, but he isn't a brilliant finisher, he just isn't, especially with his head. Improbably good technique on the bicycle/scissor kick yes, brilliant finishing, no.

Anyway, it just struck me as a bizarre thing to say.

After all these years, he still continues to amaze.

I'm actually startled by some of the gear he comes out with.

Can we please take a break from this relentless DB attacks? I know he can stick up for himself fine, but not every thread which he starts, or posts in, needs to be attacks on him -

Cheers

Attacks?

If you're gonna post absolutely shite every fucking day, people are going to pick you up on it and rightly so. Plus, I'm sure he's big enough to look after himself LTW.

No doubt he's a good lad, he's just fucking shit on this website. You're essentially asking us to ignore that fact.

He doesn't post absolute shit every day mate - even when he posts stuff that is worth a discussion, he gets ripped (and I stand up and admit I did it too for the Giggs thread)

It's much like Fox was back in the day - everything he posted, slammed by everyone, whether it was a good post or not.

Just my two lira.

I disagree mate. I think he posts shite every day, and he brings it on himself.

Take a trawl through some of his most recent posts on this forum, and count how many of them aren't fucking hopeless.

Shouldn't take you long.

Fair enough but I think they are alot of players who score goals but do not stand out as great finishers. Kuyt has scored a decent amount for the calender year of 09 but I wouldn't say he is a good finisher.

Anyway that was only a small point I was more pointing out that I was happy for Crouch and still think he could have added a good alternative in attack.

I see what you are saying DB, fuck the others, and I agree, Crouch appears to score more than his fair share of good well taken goals.

Unfortunately for Ryan he does not have the same influence as Brendan, so his continual assassination attempts of DB are harder than Brendan's was of Fox
I agree LTW , it is becoming pretty tiresome
