Craig Bellamy's Retired

What I'm saying is that he's a likeable charecter. He jokes around, has tantrums, says crazy things like when he said "you're a fucking genius" to Rafa on camera etc.
Its sad that he's quitting and all that but he was never a top class player imo. If he was he would have played for one of the bigger clubs much earlier in his career.
Fine it's your opinion of course. Who am to tell you you're wrong? (which you are) Bellers was a fantastic player. For me though I just like the fact he was/is a proper character. A massive red who had two spells with us.

He's had a good career and has been a nightmare for defenders over the years. As said, he might not be an exotic country based player but he was a top talent and a bundle of entertainment on and off the pitch. Sure, he's not up there with the Suarez' of the World, but it would be stupid to have not rated him, at his best he was absolute quality and his setpieces were great too.

"Absolute quality", get the fuck out of here...

He was, at most, an above average player who shined in mediocre teams.
If he really was this top quality player with great free kicks and a nightmare to defenders why the hell didn't any of the top teams in England want him until we picked him up to be a squad player?

He was quick, if that is equal to being a nightmare for defenders then Cissé was a nightmare as well.
I'm not even sure if Bellamy ever managed to score over 10 league goals in a season the premiership.

Going by your 'logic' Modo, you're not a quality player if one of the top sides in England didn't sign you. Bull-fucking-shit.

Someone better tell Gary Linekar, Matt le Tissier, Paul Gascoigne, Glenn Hoddle, Gary McAllister (one of your "squad players), etc that then.

Yet again you're talking firmly out of your arse.

Erm Riise was far from a 'berk'.

Riise was a great servant to the club and involved in some amazing moments for us but if he's not a plonker i'd be shocked . He always seemed a muppet .

I mean look at the state of his hair !

It's like some reverse ginger skunk.

If anything, Bellamy underachieved considering his talent. Injuries and off-field issues curtailed his career.

His pace, skill and work rate should have been enough for him to be a regular part of a top-4 team's attack.

Yeah I always judge people on their hair.

I like Bellamy, but there is some serious revionism going on here. He was a good to very good player on his day, but he was not a top player. His scoring record would be better if he was. He had the odd fantastic game in him (like against city mentioned above, also away at chelsea in the carling cup run), but was not consistent enough. Given his talent, he probably should've been a more successful footballer. Having said that he seems like a genuinely good guy. From the above point Lineker played in a very decent Everton team and Barcelona, MacAllister was at Leeds when they were a top side, Gascoine played in Italy when it was the wealthy league that signed the biggest stars and Le Tissier has opnely said he liked being the big fish in a small pond. They're not really comparable.

I think he matured a little too late into his career to truly make the most of it and of course all the injuries didn't really help. Perhaps he could've / should've achieved more with the talent he had.

"At his best". Do you just skim posts and jump on what suits? Once again most people think you're talking through your hoop. There's a surprise.

Yep I agree.

Bellamy could be absolutely top quality in short streaks, the main one I remember being 05/06, when he was truly excellent. But most of the time he wasn't.

He had the potential to be top class, but he basically never really fulfilled it. For whatever reason(s).

This. He seems to have mellowed a lot and comes across as an intelligent lad who had his fun when he was younger (like Carra) and then something clicked in him to focus on his game, albeit it came somewhat later for him. When we played Cardiff, Rodgers spoke of his regret in not having had Bellamy on the team last season. I'm not sure if he meant it or if he was being nice, but if it was the former, I hope he invites Bellamy up to Melwood one of these days and is able to help him along with his managerial/coaching career.

This.

He was alright with us, like. He could have done more with his potential, but it was too few and far between at times. I think injuries played a part with that, also.

I really like him as a bloke, though. Seems like a really good fella, and a massive red.

Loved him as a person and a player. Wore his heart on his sleeve and ran himself into thr ground for the cause. The qualities Suarez displays remind me of Bellers, paired with an ungodly talent.

Best wishes Craig and more meat to ya!

I don't know where Aidan is coming from with the revisionism, Modo jumped on my comment and said "Absolute quality, you're having a laugh". When what I said infact was, when he was "at his best" he was absolute quality. And I then went on to say that he wasn't top tier, but he was still a very good player who could be a menace to any defense on his day. I don't think that's wrong or wide of the mark, I can't see where anyone has really said he was this brilliant, week in, week out, talent. Do people read posts?

Maybe he was referring to the general tenor of the thread and not just your posts?

I knew that someone would pull Le Tiss out of their ass.

Ryan, you know a lot about football but you just listed a bunch of players from like 20 years ago, kind of a different situation back then. Lineker played for Barca, Gazza for Lazio, Hoddle went to France, Mcallister played for fucking Leeds, they thought they were a top side (historically they are).

Nowadays players aren't as loyal as they were back then.

A little too quick judge...

I bet Lallana will pull a LeTissier and stay loyal to Southampton based on your logic.
Regarding LeTiss every big team in England wanted him, he just didn't want to leave.

I noticed this post after I posted my little rant, spot on.

I remember him as a less effective version of Suarez, aggressive, good ball control, good finisher, decent dribbler and a nightmare to play against. Worked tirelessly for the team and always wanted to win badly.
Plus at a time when we had the likes of Zendon on the wing I thought his pace and work rate were badly needed.

Wish we'd gotten him 10 years earlier

I think we are at nothing debating if Bellamy was a good player or a very good player. Splitting hairs really. I'll always remember him for the battering he gave City in that semi, his goal against Barcelona in the CL and that hug with Dalglish as he left the field after Gary Speed died.

When's the book out?

Well I read through the posts to make sure I wasn't imagining it, and no one else really mentioned him being anything other than a livewire player who was occasionally brilliant (cf my point which was incorrectly quoted by Modo), so the point still stands. Where's Aidan coming from with the "revisionism" comment?

This. Bellamy was referred to as quality in at least two or three posts here, which he consistently was not. I like Bellamy as a person and was happy both times we signed him and would've liked to have kept him for Rodgers first season, but overall he was a decent player.

It was not directed solely at you Mark. You did refer to him as a top talent, which his overall career shows he was not. Modo's never rated him comment was a bit far the other way too to be fair also. His talent lies somewhere in between for me.
