How The Fuck did this happen???

Liverpool FC eager for Martin Kelly to sign new contract Nov 9 2010 by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

LIVERPOOL have opened talks with Martin Kelly over a new contract as reward for the defender’s impressive breakthrough into the first-team fold.
Kelly’s current deal expires at the end of the season and Anfield officials are keen to tie the 20-year-old to a lengthy agreement.
The England under-21 international made his debut two years ago and has this season become a regular feature in Roy Hodgson’s matchday squad, making nine appearances.
However, his outing against Chelsea at the weekend was the first Premier League start of his career, with Kelly’s only other top-flight exposure coming as a substitute in the 4-1 win over Portsmouth in March.
Kelly stepped in at right-back against the champions at short notice after Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Glen Johnson were ruled out on the morning of the game, and the youngster’s performance earned the plaudits of his manager.

“If you are going to single out someone then Martin Kelly deserves a lot of praise,†said Hodgson.
“It was a tough game for him to come into because the left side of Chelsea’s attack is a very dangerous one and you have to make some very nuance decisions there and I think he did pretty well.
“He might not have been in the 18 had Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Glen Johnson not gone down with sickness and injury on the morning of the game.â€
Hodgson also had words of encouragement for Lucas Leiva, the much-criticised Brazilian who produced arguably his best display in a Liverpool shirt by helping the home side dominate Chelsea’s midfield.
“Lucas has been strong mentally and he needs to be because he is a good footballer, like many of the other players who are getting stick or will get stick,†said Hodgson.
“We don’t have that many bad players here but it is a big arena to play in and people expect a lot from players.
“Where Lucas has been strong is to put the criticism he has been receiving over the last couple of years behind him and get out and show he is a very good player.
“I’ve always believed in him and to be fair my predecessor never doubted him, playing him on a regular basis, so he didn’t give the criticism any credence either.â€

Having disposed of the champions and league leaders, Liverpool face three of the bottom four in the next 10 days with trips to Wigan Athletic and Stoke City followed by a home clash with West Ham United.
First up is tomorrow’s visit to the DW Stadium, and Hodgson has urged his players not to take their return to form for granted after notching four successive victories.
“We have to be very careful,†said the 63-year-old.
“We have to get our feet back on the ground very quickly after the Chelsea victory.
“We now have to make sure any praise does not affect our work. We have to realise we are capable of performances like the one against Chelsea but we are also capable of performances like the one against Blackpool when we were beaten 2-1.
“We have to try to get rid of one of those performances and keep the other.
“But we have four good wins behind us and let’s hope we can get at least one win in the net two games as our form away from home has not been good traditionally this year.â€

He can talk to any club officially about moving on a free in just over 7 weeks.

This is a huge fuck up.

I'd be absolutely baffled if he suddenly were to leave still.

He'll probably get a bit of a payraise now baring in mind his latest positive contribution which is only fair. I'm sure he's here for the long run.

i doubt he'll leave but this is still a stupid position to have let ourselves get into - didn't city get burnt like this with daniel sturridge?

there's always going to be a temptation for a player to go off and sign a big contract elsewhere, especially for someone like kelly who isn't yet completely assured of a premier league career.

Isn't there an exception to the Bosman rule in England for players under 24?

I don't think we are in any risk of losing him anyway.

In fairness, this does look like a bit of hindsight.

I don't think anyone was convinced a year ago that he'd turn into a top player, and tbh we still don't.

He's got the makings of one though, and I hope the contract is sorted out soon.

Even if no one is in for him, there are bound to be stories now to generate speculation and then we could see ourselves in a difficult situation, let's hope it's sorted ASAP because he looks the real deal.

At least he should tick all the boxes in the New buying policy.

Young (Tick)

Promising (Tick)

Cheap (free because he is here)

I think you are overeacting here. It is not a huge fuck up.

And how many teams more attractive than Liverpool are going to talk to this guy? He have made 1 PL start.

i don't think it does at all. he was clearly a good prospect a year ago - good enough to want to tie down on a decent contract, and the fact we haven't seems like carelessness.

also - i think there is an exception to the bosman for young players, but all we'd get is a compensatory fee, set by some tribunal, which might not be anything like market value.

that's just the sort of complacency we don't need. loads of clubs would be all over signing a player like kelly - and the crucial factor for the player might not be their 'attractiveness' but the sort of contract they'd be willing to offer him as someone who hasn't yet been able to secure his financial future from the game.

He is the first player of promise in yonks to have stepped up from the reserves and actually look good (some on the Forum Saturday said he looks better than 17M Johnson).

He actually broke through in 08, got a Man of the Match vs Lyon at Anfield in the CL.

Recently picked for Englands U21, where he scored a goal on his debute.

He's played 13 times in total for the first team, and almost EVERYONE has been saying how good he is.

What's Rick Parry got to do with it? He left the club 18 months ago.

That's not true.

I said early on in his time in the reserves that I reckoned we have a Premiership player on our hands. I'm pretty sure I wasn't alone either.

Name a few of the clubs that will be all over Kelly which at the same time is more attractive than us??

Sorry to go off topic for a sec (still staying with the article posted), but this is the type of shit Roy needs to get out of his interviews:

“But we have four good wins behind us and let’s hope we can get at least one win in the next two games as our form away from home has not been good traditionally this year.â€

Maybe he should be saying "Lets hope we can win the next game, then we will concentrate on winning the game after that". He always seems to raise the bar too low for this club!

He can't actually talk to any clubs in seven weeks, at least not in England. That can't happen until he has 1 month left. He can talk to clubs outside England in january though.

But so what, it won't happen anyway. He wants to stay here, and will sign a new contract.

Hes a local lad and I suspect Liverpool is the club he wants to play for. Cant see him leaving to be honest, and I expect his to be our CB in the future

insignificance> you missed the point. a club's 'attractiveness' could well be irrelevant to someone in kelly's position. i'm sure there are plenty of 20 year olds who'd be willing to drop down to a lesser club if they offered them a big, long-term contract that gave them financial security for the rest of their lives. virtually any prem club waving the right money would fit the bill.

now i'm not saying that'd be kelly's point of view, just that i'd completely understand if it was.

Close enough 😉

Enviable position for young Kelly to be in, contract due for renewal and high praise from his Manager on the back of some good performances. His agent should be able to get him a very good deal. I expect preliminary talks have already taken place.

Player Notes:
Tall, elegant centre-half Martin Kelly graduated to Melwood in the summer of 2007 and was a part of Gary Ablett's reserve team that won the League in the 2007-8 season. Rafa included him in the group of Liverpool players listed for the Champions League and he made his debut when he came on for Jamie Carragher in the 82nd minute against PSV Eindhoven on 9th December 2008. He didn't play any more games that season for Liverpool's first-team and was loaned out to Huddersfield Town in League One from March until the end of the 2008-2009 season and made 7 League appearances for the Yorkshire club. Kelly finally made his full Liverpool debut against Lyon at Anfield in a group stage game in the 2009-2010 Champions League season. He played as right-back and had a man-of-the-match performance, delivering quality crosses and showing undoubted skills. He might have had a good run in the side but injured his groin against Lyon and was sidelined for four months.

By the time he had recovered from the injury he sustained in October 2009, only a couple of months of the season remained. Time enough, however, for Martin to make two more substitute appearances ... away to Unirea Urziceni on the 25th of February and at home to Portsmouth on the 15th of March before getting injured again and not featuring for the rest of the season.

Having recovered from his injury, Martin impressed during Liverpool's pre-season period in the summer of 2010; and he was rewarded by being named for the first time in England's Under-21 squad, with national manager at that level Stuart Pearce declaring "Martin Kelly has played for Liverpool in this pre-season in a European qualifying tie and I also saw him with the younger age groups, so it's a great opportunity for him". At Ashton Gate, Bristol on the 10th of August Martin came on as a second-half substitute and scored England's second goal in a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan.

Is it not normal for 18 year olds to get a 3 year contract while they attempt to break in to the team.

Had Kelly not suffered injuries last year, I'm sure he may have been offered a contract extensions sooner, as it happens he's only just broken in to the team.
