Confederations Cup

Haven't Goretzka already agreed to join Bayern? I'm quite certain I read that somewhere.

Has anyone confirmed if we drop to the Europa League if Chile win this?

Goretzka denied all the rumours.

In a recent interview with Bild he said that he needs international football to prove himself on the big stage in order to make Germany's World Cup squad. He would have preferred to be in Europe with Schalke but right now he is considering his options and will make a decision soon.

Watching a bit of Mexico - New Zealand and the use of the video replays have been a bit of a joke. They just spent 2,5 minutes in injury time watching replays of some handbags between the players. And it ended with 3 yellow cards being handed out.

Loads of work to be done regarding using this in the future.

Welcome to the NBA

It's the first tournament in which it's been used. Did anyone expect it to be perfect from the off ? It's a very useful exercise from which changes to it's use and format may well be applied. Overall in this event it's been successful though.

Maybe it has, I havent seen much of the Confed cup. Yesterday wasnt a very good example of how this can be used though.
So its got some way to go before it can be applied and used.

Its great that they're testing it though, its been much needed.

Mexico up 2-1 to Russia now. Russia down to 10 men but flooding players forward. Fullback had a glorious chance to equalize with a backdoor run but volleys well over.

Mexican third goal ruled out by the VAR correctly for offside a few mins back.

Portugal up 2 to New Zealand and cruising.

I really hope Emre Can signs a new contract he is playing a big role for Germany at the moment and looks like a player who has potential to step up and improve as he gains more experience and game time with both club and country.

Chile have battered Germany so far but resolute defending until Diaz offers the ball on a plate and Stindl walks it into an open net.

This has been a belter of a game. Germany so cool and composed but unable to out the game away. Chile attacking in waves but getting frustrated and starting to show some nerves.

Referee let a Chilean off with just a yellow for an elbow to the jaw after VAR review.

It has been a good game. That goal was fucking typical though, Chile were peppering (pun intended) the German goal continually before they scored against run of play.

It was so predictable that Germany would hit them on the counter and be brutally efficient. I was only surprised that it happened so early in the game and that they didn't get at least one more with the chances they had.

I have no idea what the Confederations Cup is, or why it exists, but I watched the last 15 minutes of Germany's win, and some of the post-match "analysis", and I was delighted by how often the word "efficient" was used to describe the Germans. I swear Lee Dixon affected a sort of Allo Allo German accent every time he said it.

All that brand repositioning over the years still can't shake off entirely the brutal efficiency* of the Nazi marketing machine from the 30s and 40s

*Obviously

Ha! Yes, English commentary most definitely buys and sells ethnic and nationalism based tropes quite enthusiastically.

Yep, but it's not just the efficient Germans

Every major international tournament brings out the time-tested classics:

The French are artists
Brazil are silky-skilled hedonists.
On the rare occasion that the Irish, Welsh or Scots qualify, they're "plucky" and just here to enjoy themselves.
Argies are masters of the dark arts and cheats. As are every other South American nation apart from silky-skilled Brazil.
The Italians are cynical masters of defensive football.
Africans and Koreans always play with a "smile on their faces" and run about a lot, but have rubbish goalkeepers.
The Dutch are always riven by "infighting" and racist cliques.

What the fuck is the point of this competition? Oh, to make corrupt FIFA more money? Oh, right you are. Carry on.

It's a bit like the football equivalent of Big Brother. Days and weeks go by, hardly anyone takes much notice, but you look at the listings occasionally and find that the bloody thing is still going.
