@KuperSimon FYI - I speak with Damien Comolli on tonight's Fox Soccer Report. First interview since leaving Anfield. An exclusive.

Presumably he's pretty much gagged from discussing us, but all the same...

Yep he's still apparently discussing a settlement package with the club so nothing will be discussed about his glorious time at Anfield.

This was tweeted a while ago:

Just listened to the Comolli interview on Fox Soccer

1) Thinks that DoF role is still useful in England

2) Made a mistake on a player that was "mentally" not strong enough. Any guesses?

3) Every transfer, no matter how much effort is put in, can be a failure.

Or, to put it another way:

1. I'd still like another job in the Prem one day - that's where the money is.
2. F'ck you, Downing.
3. Hey, it isn't just me, you know.

Why presume it's Downing?

He's been getting the in the team, then not really delivering, where as Carroll can't get in the team most of the time.

That said I'm of the mind that Carroll will work out here, wouldn't give up on Downing yet either.

Henderson's strong enough mentally. If it's one of ours it must be Downing (Tord Grip suggested the same thing about the player back in Sven's era as England manager), but it's more likely he's referring to an earlier signing elsewhere. As has been noted, his pay-off hasn't yet been sorted out.

It literally could be ANY of them (the British bunch, I mean), couldn't it?

I suspect it's Downing, though. I remember Southgate saying when we signed him that he had doubts about whether he had the mentality to succeed at a club with higher expectations.

If Carroll and Henderson didn't have mental strength they'd have topped themselves by now after all the flak they've had.

From all i've seen of Henderson it seems like he's integrated into the group well and is quite a liked character. In that crossbar video Him, Suarez and Coates seemed to get on great. He and Shelvey are often quite buddy too after games i've noticed. So I don't think it's Henderson. It's either Downing or Carroll for me.

If it's one of ours then I want to see the subsequent loss of value in the transfer fee come out of Comolli's settlement now that this player's mental weakness has been announced.

I know you're exaggerating for effect, but problems with mentality could be any number of things. It doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't resilient. In Carroll's case, it could quite easily be that his heart is in the wrong place, that he likes a drink, or that he doesn't apply himself sufficiently in training.

And while I don't doubt Henderson's commitment, he has admitted that he's played within himself this year, and hasn't looked at all comfortable with the weight of expectation here. He's shirked any kind of attacking responsibility all season.

The fact is, neither player has enjoyed a great deal of success thus far, so it's not out of the question to suggest that mentality could come into it (although in the case of these two, I'd suggest ability is a bigger problem).

But you must see that Downing's weakness is far more obvious, has been noted by some footballing figures and has been discussed for several years now, so it seems perverse to be arguing that others are more obvious candidates. Henderson is captain of his national team, is already used to dealing with pressure and has never seemed anything other than a willing and humble young student of the game. Carroll has come back from an horrendous period to start looking like the prospect he'd seemed two years ago.

I wasn't arguing that the others are more obvious. I was just saying that the mentality of all of them could be called into question. I agree (as stated above) that Downing is the most likely.

I'd agree that Downing probably fits the description best, but I reckon Dalglish was the driving force behind that particular transfer, so if it's one of our players he's talking about I think it'd be Carroll.

Downing and Adam I reckon. Carroll mostly Comolli. The others probably more or less joint decisions.

In my umble opinion.

I gather that one of Comolli's problems was the fact he couldn't keep his mouth shut. A day or so before the Carroll transfer, for example, he not only confided in a few hacks but also excitedly explained exactly where he envisaged Kenny would play him in the team. He started doing that kind of thing more and more. Maybe it was the thrill of someone from a non-footballing background finding himself on the inside, but he certainly talked too much.
