I didn't mean to highlight Aguero. Oh yeh Cassano went to Sampdoria...

Meireles, Diarra, Riquelme, Cazorla could be added too.

Yeah we clearly can offer huge wages too, so the CL/money shout have been overused. Plus we can offer ourselves as a club of history and tradition which the likes of City cannot.
 
pretty compelling post by oncy. okay, CL football isn't the be all and end all but c'mon, you're not telling me it isn't a factor if say two clubs are in for the player and one club has CL whilst the other does not.
 
To be fair you could argue that all the players listed who went to city without CL had a huge pay packet to appease them. Plus Adam Johnson is on the list and he saw it as an escape route out of the championship. cf Bale, he was Southampton before his move to Spurs.

A few on the list were making their first 'big' move and we're starting out in their careers. i.e. Kun and Pato leaving South america at a young age to make their first move to European football.

Also players like Riqeulme/Quaresma enjoy being a big fish in a small pond. Both failed at Barca and moved on to clubs where they could be the main man. Riquelme is back in south america as in Robinho. That shows a lack of ambition really. Melo and Diego both suffered at Juve and their careers have stagnated.

Other's like Meireles and Modric left 'lesser' leagues to come to England. Chelsea and united are both linked to Modric and Raul was linked to Inter. Both could get CL football if they moved on.

Cassano is known to be mental and moved from club to club and is not really in a position to demand CL football. He had played it with Madrid and saw Sampdoria as a way out of a troubled spell in Spain.

Lass Diarra claimed pompey was a stepping stone for him and he proved that by moving to Madrid.

Now, i'm not making a case for the posters who use the "we can't offer CL" excuse because I don't agree with that mentality. Just bored at the mo waiting to go drinking and providing another outlook to Oncy's post. Good thread btw dude.

I don't agree like, but well done anyway.

I think certain types of players will come to us determined to help us into CL footy, but they're few & far between. As such I half agree with kenny's buying strategy.

Not completely, but half, & I understand his thinking. I hope he knows more than us & proves us wrong cos he's in the driving seat.
