Kenny Dalglish believes Joe Cole's goalscoring cameo appearance against Birmingham last weekend could help boost his Anfield career.

Cole has struggled to establish himself in the starting eleven since swapping Chelsea for Liverpool in the summer, but the boss insists the Reds' fifth goal in the rout of Alex McLeish's side could have a major bearing on the 29-year-old's future.

"Joe's goal wasn't a little contribution," said Dalglish.

"It could be massive for him because he has not had as many opportunities as he would have liked as he's been injured and suspended.

"He's had a difficult time, but it is a great credit to him the way he has been training and working every single day.

"He's not let it affect him, and that's all I can ask for - for anyone when they do get their chance to go on and do their best. He is fantastic in training. He plays everything right and doesn't have a problem.

"Joe, like Maxi and others out of the team, are giving themselves the best opportunity because, in training, they are committed and determined.

"Everybody has to work hard to get anything and Joe is no different from anybody else. But he's done that, and has got his chance. It could be important for him."

Another nice little touch from the King, bigging up someone who seems more of a "confidence player" than most (while doubtless keeping the price nice and warm in case there's interest from other clubs).

Haha, someone should post that Hodgson "Joe Cole has a weak mentality" interview for comparison

"He isn't a naturally confident character. He suffers when things aren't going his way. Everyone at the club has worked hard to make sure he doesn't take it too hard and take too much on himself, because he's quite happy to take responsibility."

Hodgson commented, "He knows he is better than that and he knows he can do better than that.

"He sets himself high standards and I'm sure he came off the field feeling it was not the performance he wanted to give.

"Players like Joe play on very small margins."

"I think he has got to do it on the field of play," Hodgson said, according to The Mirror.

"With all the best will in the world, people can be in support or not in support, some will say he's not doing it, and some will say he's unlucky because he's not playing in the right position.

"But I don't have any truck with that. Joe is a midfield player, and what's the right position for a midfield player? Gerrard has played all over midfield for as long as I can remember.

"Joe has to come to terms with the fact that he has come here after an unsuccessful period at Chelsea with high hopes of taking Liverpool by storm and unfortunately it's not happened. That's life.

"He should have great confidence in his ability as he is a very good footballer. As far as I am concerned, everything he has to say should be said on that patch of green grass.

"He should be convincing me and everyone watching that this is a player who can help Liverpool win things. And I think you couldn't say that has been the case so far."

The Reds have a busy schedule through Christmas and New Year, and the manager now wants Cole to use the opportunity to prove himself.

"He'll get plenty of chances because we'll need everybody. I have not lost faith in him in any way. He is a good footballer. But you can't deny the start he wanted has not materialised," Hodgson added.

"I don't care how many things are written or said, you can't make black into white. But he is training well, it seems to me that his confidence is gradually returning and all Joe needs is a couple of good games or maybe a goal and that could turn things around for him.

"You'll have to ask him what isn't working. If he says, the only place he can play is behind the striker, he is limiting his chances of playing here. We also have Gerrard and Meireles who can play in that position, and we also have a situation where at the moment quite often we are playing with two strikers.

"I would be sad to hear him saying something like that, because he would be suggesting he can't do what he has done so often in the past for England and Chelsea, which is playing in a different position."

There had been suggestions that the ex-West Ham midfielder was not one of Hodgson's signings, but the boss maintained that he did play a part in bringing the player to Anfield.

However, Hodgson also insisted that Cole was not promised any specific position prior to his arrival.

He added: "I played my part in persuading him it was a good move, but I made it clear I couldn't promise him a certain position. I made it very clear Steven Gerrard was staying, and the competition for the one spot, if it was the one spot he wanted, it was going to be very tough.

"He's not so much a player I can really take responsibility for. I'd have to share the responsibility for Joe, but I have every faith in his ability, and I'm sure he'll come good."

i expected kenny to give him much more game time than he has.

Nah, Kenny has clearly a wage budget to work with, as well as a budget to buy based partly on selling players too.

Cole will fetch a better price than most in the transfer market & is on extremely high wages.

Kenny is undoubtedly thinking him going will make room for two top drawer players in wage terms & fetch enough to buy a middle of the road player too.

I have no doubt FSG will have a fairly strict wage cap for the squad & that, not the transfer fee, will be the stumbling block to strengthening this summer.

Joe Cole is wanted by QPR, Tottenham and West Ham.

Tough choice. Not.

How is he going to get a game ahead of Modoric, Bale and Kranjcar?

Spurs would be mad to buy him.

Kranjcar should be off at least.
[/quote]

Yeah he looks a dead cert to leave (he's made a shed load of comments about moving on soon).

Any more word from your media pal on us buying Neymar?

If he wasn't on the crazy wages he is on I'd be happy for Cole to be here next wouldn't have been here this season.

Kenny will sell him, I've no doubts.

I only hope we don't sell an expensive attacking midfielder/forward who isn't all that effective in a wide position and buy...an expensive attacking midfielder/forward who isn't all that effective in a wide position...
