Clyne is back

I'd have Clyne over TAA until TAA improves defensively then its a no brainer. Gomez doesn't even come into the equation as he's the worst of the three imo. Im a defense first kind of guy and TAA is nowhere near as good defensively as Clyne right now.

Aside from the WBA game where everyone was horrendous, I don't recall TAA making too many mistakes or being positionally naive. It seems a common misconception based on the fact he's a good attacker. Gomez is the more natural defender but his mistakes have been ridiculously amateurish, by comparison.

I wouldn't argue against the fact that a fully fit Clyne was a better defender - he was more experienced for one, but I don't think TAA is quite as defensively poor as being made out. I don't recall too many goals (or chances) coming down his side of the pitch. Certainly not enough for it to be any particular concern. Gomez had to be taken out the limelight because he WAS making mistakes in nearly every game.

People are judging the experience of a mid 20's International fullback against a kid and surmising that TAA should be at the same level or something. I'm pretty sure Clyne was learning the trade and making the odd error at the same age. In fact, in his last fully fit season he made plenty of mistakes.

I think the curious case of Glen Johnson thought me that playing full back for Liverpool is a complex matter. From being a disciplined well functioning right back he turned into believing he was Maradona MKII and his most important contribution should be dribbling, scoring and finishing off attacks. Defenisve duties became some lefthand work which was of less importance. Hence, until Clyne has played a few games again, and I can see for myself what he is up too these days, I will stay by TAA who has, together With Gomez, had quite fine Seasons.

I'm surprised he's only 26. I thought he was older. So he's got plenty more years in him. But I've heard before he's never really settled in the area (and he does seem like one of the few who's not really embraced the Klopp community), and he's supposedly keen to move back dahn sarf, so it wouldn't surprise me too much if he went.

Then again, our strength at RB is currently deceptive. TAA, for me, is going to really blossom in midfield, and the sooner the better. Gomez is bound for central defence. So aside from Clyne himself, that just leaves youngsters like Neco Williams and Patrik Raitanen (who is probably more of a CB anyway). In fact, over the past three years, our under 23 and 18 squads have gone from being right foot heavy to left foot heavy (which is probably good sales-wise, but not so good in terms of grooming first teamers), so there's quite an imbalance there that needs sorting out.

So a couple more years of Clyne is probably more important than it currently might seem.

Glen Johnson was always an attacking fullback, which is why we bought him. He was always ordinary in defence, not something that changed when he came to Liverpool.

Glad he's back and personally I still think the main job of a full back is to defend first and attack second. Which is why I really like Clyne, as defensively I think he's very good.

But Trent is playing so well, Clyne has a fight for the shirt and against the weaker sides at Anfield, I'd be going with Trent due to him being better going forwards. I don't think Clyne is as poor going forward as it is made out, but Trent's crossing is just brilliant.

But against a top team, I'd be going with Clyne as defensively he's the better player.

He changed from ordinary to fucking lazy and abysmal in his defensive duties.

Yep. When he was first coming through, he was applauded for both his ability going forward and his assurance at the back. His concentration levels were dreadful at times for us.

This is fair. I've always liked Clyne; he's quick, aggressive and a solid defender - but there's no way he's a better attacking option that TAA, who is a MILES better passer and has more attacking quality and instincts.

TAA is must for the home games against the mid table teams where we will have lots of possession. Clyne return is timely for the champions league.

The best things about Clyne returning are that he can play left back or be another option at right back allowing Gomez to go left because these both make Moreno one step further away from the team.

I see no reason why TAA should blossom into a midfielder. I hope he stays as a RB as i think he could be a world class RB in a few years time.

Because for one thing he can already shoot better from distance than almost anyone on this team. If he plays in midfield he'll have 2-3 chances to trouble the goalkeeper in every game, whereas as full-back you need some luck to get into a shooting position.

You should've watched him in the ressies, then, where he mainly played in midfield after a spell in defence. He's a dynamic player, with great vision, capable of box to box performances, who has a natural inclination to attack. You might as well have said there was no reason why Gerrard should've blossomed into a midfielder. Alexander-Arnold won't stay as a right back. He's a midfielder.

Nathaniel Clyne played the full 90 minutes on his return from injury as Dominic Solanke's hat-trick fired Liverpool Under-23s to an emphatic 4-0 win over Stoke City.

England international Clyne, who has missed the entire season following back surgery, looked fit and strong as he shone on his return at right-back.

If Southgate doesn't want to whine this summer about his players being burnt out, he could field pretty much a whole team of players who've either missed most of the season, like Clyne, or have spent most of it stuck on the bench, like Hart. So at least they'll be fresh this time when they under perform!

Get him back in the side

He played the whole game yesterday for the under 23s, which was quite an achievement seeing as they planned to sub him on the hour, and he was still really running hard in the last minute. On the negative side, he was dragged out of position several times and looked very rusty in terms of his defensive qualities, so he'll need a couple more run outs at least, I think, before he's ready again for the first team. But his fitness is pretty amazing.

I suppose cocaine does get you bouncing around for ages.

Has it been confirmed that he was out because of substance abuse, or is it still some bad joke?
