He was very vociferous when he 'packed' the international game in. Would he have answered England's call if there wasn't a World Cup looming?
I think he was vociferous with regard to defending his decision to idiots who called him unpatriotic etc. but I don't think he was making a big point with it.

Of course he wouldn't answer the call if there wasn't a world cup. I guess I don't see that as a problem.
Nor me. He will not be winning at big trophies at Liverpool and it's a decent chance to work under Capello. Given he wishes to go into management, the appeal of doing so is obvious.
Yeah, maybe he just wanted to play with a decent team in with a chance of winning something.

I've lost a bit of respect for Carragher because of his u-turn. Only a smidgeon mind but still.
TBF though, he didnt pack it in for reasons like not liking England, or the pressure, or anything else, it was simply him wanting to play for Liverpool or at the highest level for as long as possible.

this way he gets to still do that but may get to play in the WC. If someone had offered that to him instead of retiring "yeah, dont play any friendlies & we'll still put you in the squad for SA" like Giggs gets with Wales, then he'd have never retired.

To go into a WC with a formation you've never used before, utilsing players none of whom play it at club level, would be nothing short of a disaster, and a ridiculous move.

Capello doesn't seem like a risk taker to me so I'd guess this report is wrong.

I thought it was because he was being overlooked and picked behind 'lesser and injured' players and when he was picked, he was being played in positions other than centre back.

Depends on the players at your disposal. It worked at Italia 90.

Carra will stand in for Magic if he gets injured. Wouldn't it be something special if Carra was to win the WC? He is a true legend that deserves it all!

Carra would really struggle to play RB game after game in a tournament like that. Aren't there any other decent English RBs?

Yeah, the formation did but it had been used prior to that tourno. It hasn't this time and it would be stupid to try it.

Plus, the team was better in '90.

We started off the tournament playing 442 and switched to 352 after two crap matches, and none of the players played that formation for their club teams. So you're wrong. Again.

Nice one. Its amazing that you haven't been consulted by both Liverpool and England. You've obviously got it sorted.

Yep. Carra's disillusionment with England was one of Steve McClaren's less heralded, but still very real, foul-ups in his time as manager.
