Manchester City have petitioned the Premier League to allow the club to sign a goalkeeper on an emergency loan deal following an injury to Shay Given.

Shay Given's injury has left City short of options
Given left the pitch on a stretcher during City's 0-0 draw with Arsenal on Saturday and sustained damaged ligaments and tendons when dislocating his shoulder. He will see two specialists in the next three days and will miss the final three games of the Premier League season.

With Joe Hart unable to be recalled from his loan spell at Birmingham, where his performances saw him named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year, and Stuart Taylor out injured, young Faroe Islands international Gunnar Nielsen is next in line for Roberto Mancini's side.

Nielsen - who first moved to England when joining Blackburn in the summer of 2007, before moving onto City two years later - replaced Given at Emirates Stadium at the weekend to make his debut under Roberto Mancini.

City are now hoping to take advantage of the contingency plans which allow clubs to make an emergency signing to cover for a goalkeeping shortage, with the written permission of the governing body.

Aston Villa were forced to make an emergency signing in December 2006 when Gabor Kiraly joined the club from Crystal Palace and made five appearances after injuries to Thomas Sorensen and Taylor, then playing at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, Hart, who has excelled during his time at Birmingham, has expressed his support for Given following the nasty injury his senior colleague sustained.

"I'm devastated for Shay, I texted him on Saturday night," Hart told City's official website. "I don't want that to happen to anyone, especially someone like him - a great keeper and really good person."

This is starting to get eerie.
I don't have hope yet but if anyone would luck into the miraculous its the Senor.

Is there no way Hart could be released by Brum?
If City are thinking about selling him in the summer and Brum want to buy him, it might do Brum no harm grease the wheels now and secure him at a knock down price. I'd be surprised if Hart wasn't in goal for City's next league game.

On a side note, I know we have been shit but Joe Hart has had a better season than Pepe? Fuck right off.
And fuck these twats off, that is why you have a skwad. Did we ask to sign a striker after Torres was ruled out for the season, they have more keepers than we have strikers? Same principles, suck my balls.

Did we ask to sign Paul Jones for one month as emergency cover for our own goalkeeping crisis in 2004?

Teams are more likely to get away with bending the rules with keepers though. But its the reserve keepers I tend to feel sorry for. Remember a few years back when Dudek and Kirkland (of course) we injured and Pegguy was out on loan? Luzi got half a game, clean sheet against Chelsea and then we went out and got Paul Jones on loan!

I doubt that was an emergency loan like this one but I did feel sorry for Luzi at the time.
Stu, if they were contractually allowed to recall Hart they would have already done so, instead of taking this step.

Yeah we did, when we had 2 x goalies injured. Shay Given picking up an injury is hardly a crisis though. They have pretty much had Given and Given alone all season, almost banking on the Premier League allowing them to do this should they require it through injury. We should sell all 436 of our reserve keepers, and then just do this if Pepe gets injured. we would save a fortune!

Taylor is their back up... we have no right to complain. Personally I think young keepers should be used... but their you go.
They should play Taylor then. If he suddenly got injured, then fair enough. But they have a back up keeper.

The guy from the Faroe Islands is their only option so they don't have any option but to get somebody to act as cover for him or to take Given's place and have Nieslsen on the bench.

So they'll be allowed to sign an emergency keeper, just like we did, and rightly so

Can anyone explain why people are moaning about this?

I thought we signed Jones during a transfer window. Too lazy to check though.
January 2004.

But I think the transfer window didn't actually begin til the following season.

EDIT: I checked, the transfer window system was in place before then.
Yeah, I know there is nothing City can do. But if Brum were to cancel the deal or instigate a mutually beneficial agreement between the clubs, Brum could do well out of it, long term. Wheyher
it be securing another loan deal or perhaps a permanent transfer.

Or is it a case that the players registration cannot be changed outside of the window regardless.

He made one woeful punch in that game if I remember correctly. Anyway I know we did it, but emergency loans are gash. It should be the same for all positions.

No, because (young or not) their third keeper has played international football and can hardly be said to be a footballing babe-in-arms.

Nope, because it's Manchester City, the richest club in world football, and it's both hilarious and ironic that their squad should prove not deep enough at a crucial moment in the season. Particularly as it gives us a (very) faint hope of finishing above them.

Rafa was onto something then when he bought his 57 goalkeepers
I think he must have thought swine flu would hit the squad quite hard with numerous fatalities.

We should loan them one or two. I'm sure they're probably rubbish anyways.
