I seen that the Irish government will subsidise businesses and some workers for lost earnings. The banks and landlords will have to forget about a month or two rent and mortgage payments.I don't understand how things like the hospitality industry can survive being shut down for a period of time, I'm just reading now the MGM has shut down its hotels and casinos in vegas, and in Italy obviously they've shut everything down, and they're on about closing all the pubs in ireland(!). How can these industries survive and pay wages if they're shut for weeks on end? And if they don't pay wages, how do the people relying on those jobs survive?
How did China stabilise it and close everything down without going under?
Good point re the banks, I wonder if the governments will try and force their hands and say they've got to do something re mortgage breaks. Can't see them wanting to help people though, it's not in their nature.

The weather here was lovely but now it's got cold again and my daughter is getting cabin fever. All the playgrounds have been shut, but we're lucky in that we have a choice of gardens and whatnot for the kids to go and play in. I don't know what the people in other parts of Athens are doing. Most people live in apartments with no gardens.
Governments do shady stuff yeh. But I think if the Americans were behind it, Trump wouldn't be kissing babies on the campaign trail.I know @Rosco called this one ages ago, but there's now more traction on this idea that the americans accidentally brought it to Wuhan via the world military games, and that there were americans there who had worked at Fort Detrick which had a history of poor controls and was a biological research site (coincidentally got totally shut down a couple of days after the outbreak started). So the Chinese are pushing the idea the americans brought it over.
Here's an article about the place from Aug last year in the independant, as I know certain individuals on this site (one) doesn't believe any government on the planet does anything shady ever.

Really sorry to hear that Holle. RIP.
Here in Austria we go into virtual total lockdown (bar food runs) on Tuesday.
I know, it is really saying "stay at home, you cannot work for fear of spreading" then when its all over many people will have their livlihoods destroyed and virtually have to rebuild their lives, if they can at all.I'm not so sure if this is the way forward. In fact they're killing little businesses like hairdressers, restaurants or shops gor example. This simply cannot go on for weeks.
I think maybe the UK model is better?
Agreed. Not sure how any small business can continue unless they have their rents waived or subsidised.I'm not so sure if this is the way forward. In fact they're killing little businesses like hairdressers, restaurants or shops gor example. This simply cannot go on for weeks.

The amount of people who've got it and didn't even know makes me think this is much more widespread and much more benign than is being reported. My mate just sent me a happy link to CNN Philippines because there's a new strain of bird flu... anyway while there I checked the headlines and the leader of their senate has tested positive for Covid. The whole country is only meant to have 120 with it but this dude has been tested, has it, so is self isolating with no symptoms. Like with the footy players and NBA teams, the more you test the more you find people who already have it who aren't sick.
Yeah good point. Defo worth looking at. I mean loads tested positive but how many died? What about Nadine Dorries mum ffs. She's 80 odd and didn't know. Isn't sick.
All of which follows the UK labs suggestions that the actual number in China was likely at least x10 higher but, because of many people being asymptomatic or having extremely mild symptoms which didn't register, they weren't tested. The amount of people who've got it and didn't even know makes me think this is much more widespread and much more benign than is being reported. The problem with those cruise ships (e.g. Diamond Princess) was that something like 90% were 60 years old or above and 80% over 70. Clearly the transmission and mortality rates should be expected to be much higher than average. Especially so in such confined conditions. This is why the cruise ship numbers are worth looking at (though no idea of age variable). No one slips the net in that scenario so you don't have to speculate about undiagnosed cases.
Haha 0.5% was the figure I calculated yesterday by guesstimating 😉Here we go:
As of February 20, tests of most of the 3,711 people aboard the Diamond Princess confirmed that 634, or 17 percent, had the virus; 328 of them did not have symptoms at the time of diagnosis. Of those with symptoms, the fatality ratio was 1.9 percent, Russell and colleagues calculate. Of all infected, that ratio was 0.91 percent. Those 70 and older were most vulnerable, with an overall fatality ratio of about 7.3 percent.
Extrapolating those numbers to China, the team estimates that 1.1 percent of symptomatic cases there turned deadly. Considering asymptomatic cases drops that ratio to about 0.5 percent in China, the team calculates.

Just checked and on Bloomberg they claim 18% asymptomatic and here's a good link to testing and positives :They're all factors that you can plug in to the reading. I just haven't seen a breakdown of it.
