French Soccer Faces Financial Crisis After Record TV Deal Collapses
The sudden collapse of a billion-dollar television contract has created a serious cash crisis for French clubs as the January transfer window nears.

More: NY Times Link

If ever we need to get some talented players, assuming the Premier League doesn't take a few month break in light of Covid, France is place we should be looking at.

Who should we be looking at? I know @dmishra mentioned some young Lyon kid ...

Did I mention a Lyon player?

Denayer maybe. He has 18 months left on his deal, could be a CB target. Aouar of course should be an obvious target for many clubs.

We're linked to Renato Sanchez for 18m

I'd like to think he's got a chance to come good. The move to Bayern came too soon for him.

Not sure PSG will have "money" problems.

I did read an article about them struggling to afford his new contract in light of recent developments - even if they do sell a couple players - but I reckon Mbappe will be off to Real regardless.

Cant see it, why would we sign another attacker when we have less defenders than a paedophile who refuses to wear the poppy

He's a midfielder and we're about to lose gini, keita is still made of biscuits, as is thiago, and milner isn't getting younger

It's not a bad idea to get a talent cheaply

Long term yeah we probably do need to look at midfield. Depending on Ginis contract situation it might well become an issue this summer. However we have a bigger issue right now and thats the fact we have only one senior CB thats fit. Theres no way the board is going to release money for a player that isnt going to help solve that problem.

Depends if it makes sense long term. If we can get a talent for cheaper now than in 13 months, I think they'll do it.

I agree that it shouldn't be priority, but that's not what this threads about I though

I'd be interested in trying to rival Real for Camavinga, the young Rennes CM.

Supposedly Kamara (the marseille CB) is the next in line of great French CBs

I thought you were mentioning Cherki from Lyon?

He was absolutely terrible at Swansea

He was, but how old was he? As a 20 year old, getting loaned out from Bayern to a different league, to relegation fodder, Im not surprised he struggled.

His mentality has gone from 18 year old being one of the players of the tournament, to a relegation fodder in 2 years. His mind must have been fucked

Lille's 20 yr old centre back - they have the joint best defence (10 goals conceded after 16 games)

[article]Sven Botman: Lille's Dutch knight rises

Sven Botman has settled in quickly at LOSC Lille to provide a solid platform alongside Jose Fonte and help the club to an unbeaten start to the season as they eye a top-three finish in Ligue 1 Uber Eats.

The 20-year-old arrived from Ajax this summer to replace Gabriel — now at Arsenal — as Fonte's pupil, and the Portugal international and UEFA EURO 2016 winner's advice has helped the Dutchman perform impressively as Lille have recorded three wins — and as many clean sheets — in their opening five games of the season.

"He helps me a lot in the game and also off the field. So he is very important. Other players are also taking the job to help me. So that's good," Botman told The Ligue 1 Show of his relationship with Fonte, who — at 36 — is 16 years older than the young Dutchman.

"I'm very happy because at the beginning they are welcoming a lot, they are helping me with the training and with the matches."

"He's settled in very quickly, despite the language barrier," added coach Christophe Galtier. "Like so many players that come out of the Ajax academy, he's had a very good football education."

Botman, who joined Ajax aged nine but spent last season on loan at fellow Dutch top-flight side Heerenveen, is a big fan of compatriot Virgil van Dijk. At 1.95 (6'4"), Botman bears some of the imposing physical traits of the Liverpool defender, and is already beginning to make his mark at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.

"In football, you have leaders who are vocal, ones who gesticulate and ones who shake the team up… I have a few of those," said Galtier. "But you also have people who lead by example, through their performances, and it's true that Sven is emerging as this type of leader."

Botman may be the strong but silent type on the pitch, but is vocal enough to boldly state Lille's ambitions this season: a place in the top three — and a return to the UEFA Champions League — that they only just missed on last season.

"We are going in the good direction, with the team we are doing good matches," he said. "I think we belong in the top three. Yes, that's our goal."[/article]

I'm not sure signing a 20-21 year old like Botman or Schuurs is the way to go.

As it stands, we have a very promising 19 year old in Rhys. Fair to say that he's worked himself into our long term plans.

VVD and Matip are both 29. Matip has been consistently injury prone, and we need to see how van Dijk plays post injury.

Gomez is 23 but has 4 major injuries already in his career. Frankly, it wouldn't be surprising if he has a short career.

Nat Phillips is 23 as well, but he's barely played and the club has not reposed much faith in him. I expect that he will move on after this season.

I think if you're going for a new CB, you look for someone in the 22-25 age bracket, someone with a couple of years of first team experience already.

The problem here is finding someone in the age bracket you suggested that would sign and potentially be fourth choice, maybe fifth choice considering Fabs emergence.

You’d wonder if Klopp will upgrade the defence with a Fabinho - Virgil centre back pairing, and go for someone like Bissouma in midfield.

Theyd probably be 2nd choice given the avaulability of Gomez and Matip. Fabs should move back to midfield I want to see him alongside Thiago (God rest his soul)

[article]
Premier League side Liverpool made contact with 20-year-old Dutch central defender Sven Botman’s agent in November about a possible future transfer, according to our colleagues at Foot Mercato.

LFC are without Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk for an extended period of time and could move to sign a central defender next month. Talks however have not advanced past the stage of simple contact, according to sources contacted by Get French Football News.

Inter Milan have also made initial enquiries for the ex-Ajax man. LOSC are telling clubs that they want €50m in order to sell Botman, but owing to the very public nature of their recent financial disarray, it seems probable that Les Dogues would be willing to sell the player for €30m, which would triple the fee that they paid just 6 months ago for him: €10m.
