Blues forced to cope without Essien

Chelsea have been rocked by confirmation that Michael Essien will be out until next year after undergoing knee surgery.

The Ghana midfielder ruptured the anterior ligament and cartilage in his right knee during a training session last week. This is the third serious knee injury of Essien's career and he will be sidelined for up to six months.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said: "Everyone at Chelsea wishes Michael well for his recovery. His team-mates and all the staff and I look forward to helping him return to playing as soon as possible."

John Obi Mikel and Ramires will offer Villas-Boas similar central midfield alternatives, as could David Luiz who can play the holding role in front of the defence.

Essien has been a shadow of the player he was once for the last couple of seasons.

Ramires is the only decent Midfielder they have.

Essien is still a phenomenal player, he just keeps getting injured and then taking time to recover, so never gets to recapture his sparkling form

If i could pick one player to not play for the Chavs it would be this lad, he's class.

I really want to be made up about this news but for fear of jinxing one of ours i'll refrain from doing so.

Injuries 1 and 2 were both done whilst on international duty, which must only add to their fans frustrations.

Malouda and Lampard are slightly better than decent mate.
