I think it's would have been a win win either way.

They lose & they get a confidence knock, they win, it means they can't simply concentrate on the league & they have to contend with a tricky CL semi final just three days before they play us, & depending how that goes may know that they have to give everything just three days after to get through to the CL semi final.

Dependant on how games go before then Mourinho may well see the CL games as an easier way to make his season look a success.
