They should make the Europa League a complete knockout comp, rather than it just being a shitter version of the CL.

if they really want to spice up the europe league they should award a place in the CL to the winners. you'd see team taking the competition very seriously then.

Teams take it pretty seriously generally, it just drags on with loads of meaningless games between rubbish teams. Both competitions need s revamp to be fair

Lots of the winners probably qualify anyway. But I agree that they should change both competitions. They are both pretty shit in their own way

I don't know, I guess half the fun is that you build the excitement throughout the competition, these early rounds are a bit of a means to an end, but like any cup, the real interest only starts in the latter rounds.

You're right, they won't do it, but in theory that problem could be solved by giving each team a guaranteed share of tv money for, say, the first 2 rounds, so even if they lost the first game they'd still be compensated. Possibly the total rights package would be more valuable anyway, given that the matches would be more attractive viewing and with a guarantee of no dead rubbers etc.

I'd imagine they are not so much afraid of big teams losing money but themselves losing money if the most watched teams don't make it 'till the end every year. UEFA are too shortsighted and they wont see the benefit of the bolded part.

Fair play to Shamrock Rovers becoming the first Irish team through to the group stages of the Europa League. Irish teams have come close over the past few years, and to do it when Celtic and Rangers both went out is great for the league here. Interesting to see who they get in the draw today.

They're in Spurs' group, if anyone cares...

Yes. More a Dundalk man myself but very well done the Hoops. Got Rubin and PAOK as well.

I'm not a Rovers man, just happy to see someone in the league finally getting some results.

I think they were guaranteed €1M for making the group stages. TV rights from the Spurs match should push that up considerably

Yeah, that's a fair point. I always think in terms of the competition being designed in favour of the big clubs (to see off threat of a breakaway league), but no doubt it's just as suitable to uefa themselves.
