Celtic knocked out of the CL

But you said they’ve ‘become a really poor outfit’ and named a few current players, so what were they before? Where they good two years ago? Five?

And when we’re they any different?

Ok. So maybe they’ve always been poor on the big stage. They haven’t done anything of note in my lifetime in europe other than a UEFA cup runner up in 2003.

In a 1 (sometimes 2) horse race? Let’s call a spade a spade. Celtic’s domestic achievements, while impressive on paper, are nothing to write home about. Put them on the big stage and they usually always crumble.

Back to back trebles not big enough?

Because if you are claiming a Scottish side not going far in the CL as crumbling on the big stage then that's a bit daft

Back to back trebles when you're the only team in the league with a budget that massively dwarfs all competitors mean shit. Everybody knows it. The empty seats in Parkhead shows that the Hoops fans know it. They blew it when they sent Rangers down.

In the kingdom of the blind etc etc.

I guess we can agree to disagree. Not having an off day in 4 cups over two years is impressive regardless of the competition and doing it while winning the league and playing in the CL is even more impressive.

For fuck's sake, Dreamy, it's the Scottish league. It's shit, it has been for years. Celtic have no competition at all.

Let's face it, it's a league that's there to be dominated by anyone with above the average Scottish team's net spend. If you look at net spends there among teams in the SPL, it's like going back 20+ years in this league, that's how far behind it is with many teams.

He's done better than most managers have there, because he's not only dominated, but he's annihilated the opposition and completely wiped the floor with the league and cups. That's an achievement in itself.

But... the gulf in class between their standards and most top six teams from other European countries, is astounding. They have generally always struggled, bar that spell about 15 years ago when they had the likes of Davey Thompson, Hartson etc, they did quite well against quite a few big European teams (they beat us too remember). So the capability is there for them at least to enter European competition and be a bastard team to play against, but they are typically tippy/tappy under Rodgers, without the ruthlessness to then role their sleeves up and give a decent European team a tough game.

His European record is pretty symptomatic of his flaws here, too much emphasis on attractive play and a complete lack of guile and guts.

Pat, I like Celtic for who they are., and like many Irish people, I support them as my “second team”. But let’s be honest here. They are shite on the big stage.
