I don't follow Celtic or Scottish football but noticed Rodgers whinging about the lack of investment and blaming that for their exit.

Struck me as being strange to moan like that when you've been the completely dominant team in your league for the last several years.

Preparing himself for the MU job?

Probably didn't help himself by selling one of their best players to Southampton this summer.

I wouldn't say it's strange. The Scottish league is very poor. Celtic can dominate it without having a squad of a quality to challenge in the Champions League. So I can see why he says he needs better players. But it's implausible that better players would be prepared to spend much time, if any at all, in a league as poor as that of Scotland. Rodgers has achieved as much as he can there. It's surely time for him to move on.

It's important to qualify for financial / prestige reasons but teams like Celtic just make up the numbers.

As you say, good players aren't going to want to spend very long in the Scottish league and Rodgers can't hope to accomplish much more than he already has - the whole stand off just struck me as a little odd.

He needs to convert more of his existing players into great technicians, as they've already got great character.
They've just spent 9+million on a forward from PSG, he should count himself lucky he's not at Spurs.

His record in Europe also isnt very good, is it?

Yeah I think he's being compared to Lennon and coming up way short. He's probably worried that this is his last big job unless he does something of value in the EL.

AEK have to play the mighty Videoton in their next qualifying match.

If they make it through, what's the chance that they'll be in the same group as Liverpool? I can see the Olympic stadium where they play their home matches from our flat.

Ever since Rangers were cast to the bottom of the leagues (whatever the rights and wrongs of that) Celtic's brand has also been damaged. People will accept a 2 team league (as per La Liga), but having one team who can feasibly win the league fails to fulfil the concept of a competition. Sponsorship has tumbled across the board, and Celtic, whilst having the resources to dominate the SPL, can never be a force with even modest European pretensions until the league as a whole becomes more competitive, and becomes interesting to a wider audience. Gerrard, if he has a bit of a run at things, might be a very good thing for the SPL, because people are starting to look North just a little more than they did before. No doubt about it though, Scottish football is at its nadir.

You see, that was a missed opportunity for the SPL. They could have used those years of Rangers being in the wilderness to make it more competitive. The TV money could have been divvied up more fairly and what not.

I think this is an interesting and peculiar case. On one hand football today is so much about resources, and the consequence of this is that the pressure on delivery is there for everyone to see. And on the other hand, real good coaches can actually beat resources if they are willing to invest time and manage to sell their message across the club and to the players.

Rodgers shouldn't complain about resources to get beaten by AEK Athen. I refuse to accept that the Greek club is all about money. I didn't see the game and I don't know what the shortcomings were, but after 2 seasons in Celtic Rodgers should show that they could qualify. They might have been unlucky, the ref could have been doing them injustice, and the result is not a huge loss, but only a marginal one. However, Celtic should be on par With AEK Athen.

In Norway we struggle to keep up with Celtic. Just before the qualifier against Celtic this season Rosenborg sacked their Coach that won them 3 Leagues in a row as well as 2 of the 3 last cupfinals. They played in EL two seasons in a row. Still the board felt that they had maximized the coach's potential and is now looking for long term replacement to take the team even further, which should be CL. They could not cope with Celtic in the qualification so they have a bit to do. However, I think it is a brave move for the club and they flag sky high ambitions on low resources (compared to Europe not Norway). Moaning about resources will never take you far. They have the money they have but want to work on the things they can do even better inside the pot of Resources they have. They have a CL Legacy as they were there 10-12 years in row (this is more than 15 years ago now I Guess), but they loss the Scandinavian standing as the best Club (Malmo and Copenhagen are probably bigger now) and they spent most of their money on big administration etc instead of the team. They have slowly worked their way back to a solid national position but is some way of taking that European step. They have had some real good coaches that took them to CL every time and some "big" names that didn't take them there and ended up maning as well. It is hard to og the way on limited resources but it is possible.

I'd like to see Brodge back in the PL. Could see him doing well with a team like Palace.

It would be interesting to see what he could do. It worked ok with Swansea but what will be seen as success? Top half, a cup triumph, EL? I Guess as a manager used to win some titles now he might find it hard to be in a club that not is set for fighting for the title?

That's about the level he'd have to come in at and then prove himself (some may say 'again') before getting a shot at someone in the Top 8 to 10.

As much as I've got a soft spot for Celtic, some of their fans these days sound even battier than Bluenoses. Some of them quite seriously refuse to refer to Rangers as 'Rangers' on the grounds the club went into liquidation. They insist on only calling Rangers 'Sevco'. And yet they still take the Auld Firm games seriously (who on earth do they think they're playing against?), and they still seem to think Rangers exist when Celtic break another record. It's just taking bitterness to a new level.

Celtic have become a really poor outfit. A few decent players (Broony, Griffiths and Sinclair) in a below average team, in a below average league.

Even with us he was laughingly bad. What makes him think spending money would help?

Was Rodgers the guy who sent on our reserves against Real?
I honestly did not want us to be in the CL that season after the home embarrasment defeat to Real Madrid. Appalling attitude leading up to it .... he made us feel like we were there to make up the numbers...I would rather LFC never qualify for CL if we have to endure a campaign like we dis under Rodgers in Europe. He was shit in the cups for us.

But what did Celtic do with the dosh from previous campaigns? Seems to be enough to able it to compete with the likes of AEK.

Didn’t they just win the title for the seventh year in a row, and were unbeaten for 17 games?

In a 1 (sometimes 2) horse race? Let’s call a spade a spade. Celtic’s domestic achievements, while impressive on paper, are nothing to write home about. Put them on the big stage and they usually always crumble.

But you said they’ve ‘become a really poor outfit’ and named a few current players, so what were they before? Where they good two years ago? Five?

And when we’re they any different?
