I didn't blame Pepe too much for the own goal.

The ball came back at him fast, at short-range from the post. The best thing would probably have been for him to get out of the way of it, risking it falling to an Arsenal player. Once Pepe's body got in the way, it was almost inevitable that it was going to bounce off him over the line. On another day he might have been able to grab it, but it was a very difficult situation.

Pepe is a top keeper but he is to blame for the goal. He should have come out to take the ball instead of waiting for it. He was a bit nervous for a spell and flappy. He needs to command his area with greater authority.

I was worried that the defense and the team in general wasn't going to be as organized under hodgson but that idea was put to rest yesterday. I was also delighted at the lack of hoofball.

Hodgson is renowned for his defence and organisation

So you admit you were wrong re Hodgson ? Probably not.

Sorry I got the impression you thought he was an inept classless stooge. Not so long ago.

I said he was mediocre, had never won anything and shouldn't be managing Liverpool.

And he is renowned for his defence and organisation.

Sorry to have confused you, but I don't suppose it takes much.

I leave it to the less confused to challenge that. I can,t type I'm laughing to hard.

Dude, there is not much to laugh at.

The two statements are not mutually exclusive to a certain extent. They can both be true at the same time.

In the same post. Where.

You're RENOWNED for being a weird, boring, try-hard cunt.

It's not always positive. As the above example - which in no way reflects my opinion of you - amply illustrates.

Just answer the fucking Question then.

Back to the topic. I was more pissed off with Johnson's fuck up for the goal than Reina's. Reina had just been whacked in his head and had The Lying Rag in his eyes. Whereas Magic made yet another failure of judgment.

Pepe should have been stronger coming for the ball... if he does he catches or the contact with Chamakh forces Atkinson to blow his whistle. After it hit the post he was just ridiculously unlucky.

A fit aurelio (tee hee) is always going to be better than agger at left back. if we're intent on playing agger we may as well go three at the back because agger isn't going to get forwards as often as he should.

The 3 sound defenders and one fancy dan fullback combo works well for United and Chelsea.

Ivanovic, Alex, Terry, Cole

O'Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra

We could do with a steady fullback who loves defending.

We are very much a pacy LB short in the squad as long as Kelly is not completely ready to step up. And he's not even a left-footed is he?

If we sell Masher I reckon we'll see a rather expensive LB beeing brought in as well as a new striker.
Neither is Lahm and he's one of the best LBs in world football.

Except that O'Shea is only a stand in there for Neville and now Rafael, both excellent going forward.

Gary Neville is finished.
I agree, but the point was O'Shea only ever stood in at RB when Neville was injured, and now the same can be said for Rafael.

Back to the topic. I was more pissed off with Johnson's fuck up for the goal than Reina's. Reina had just been whacked in his head and had the S** in his eyes. Whereas Magic made yet another failure of judgment.
No way was Johnson going to go up for the ball against his own keeper ! Reina should have punched it ... end of really. Shit happens, he's human, and still one of the best 3 GKs in the world.

Funny that all my bluenose friends seem to have had a good laugh at Cole and Reina on their facebook status updates...

Erm, how did they get on again?

I think agger played really well the other day, and i loved how even though he was suffering on the sidelines he was dying to come back onto the field. Against the bigger teams id prefer our back line to be:

Reina
Johnson Carra Skrtel Agger

This ensures that defensively we are strong and we have a left back who can bring the ball forward with confidence and a right back who loves to attack whenever he can.

Against the lesser teams, id prefer he go back to CB and left back be taken by aurelio, as then we have 2 really attacking wing backs.

Either way i was really impressed with the way Hodgson has got us playing defensively aswell as playing the ball on the ground, instead of hoofball like we did under Rafa.

Noit to dispel the defense love-in, because they all played well, but...

Arsenal helped us bystaying too narrow for too long and the CB's will come up against much more difficult opponents than Chamakh.

Agger played well, but he's not a LB - a proper pacey RW'er will 'cause him problems.

Skrtel played well and looked back to the sort of form he displayed as few years back. he had a tough year last season, but he's still a decent player.

Carragher was Carragher - solid, dependable - but we know he'll dive in rashly and get done for pace every now and then.

Johnson looked alright - but we all know consistent defending and concentration is his biggest problem.

I think you can pick flaws with most defenders. People seem intent in writing off Terry, even though he's a proven Premiership defender who's won a couple of league titles. The main point is, we defended well as a unit against a good attacking side and limited them mostly to shots from distance. After last season where we looked like strangers playing together for the first time, it was refreshing and encouraging to see. Considering it was our first game and a few players have barely kicked a ball since the World Cup, I thought our workrate as a team was excellent.
