Henderson to be confirmed as new Liverpool captain

hendogerband.jpg

Henderson was always the overwhelming favourite for the honour having impressed manager Brendan Rodgers in the role of vice-captain last season.

Being made skipper completes a remarkable transformation for Henderson, who initially struggled following his £16million move from Sunderland in 2011.

He came close to joining Fulham in the summer of 2012 but opted to stayed put and forced his way back into Rodgers’ plans.

Gerrard told the ECHO back in January that Henderson was the perfect choice to succeed him as captain.

“I certainly believe Jordan has everything you need to be a great captain,” Gerrard told the ECHO.

“He’s a fantastic professional who tries to lead by example in every training session and in every game.

“He has really grown as a player and is improving all the time with experience.

“He can become a great captain for this club. He’s a fantastic player for me to hand the armband over to.

“I’ve got great respect for Jordan Henderson and I know everyone else at the club feels the same.

“He’s a true professional and a very strong character. Every day he’s in the gym doing extra work.

“He doesn’t drink and he looks after himself. He has made a lot of sacrifices to play well for this club.”

Good luck to him. He's not captain material for me, and what he actually offers on the pitch is a bit hit and miss. But I'm sure he'll give it a good crack and 100%

Yeah this is a personality thing, rather than an ability thing. It may make him a more consistent performer.

Henderson is one of the most consistent performers in the squad, I think you two are hoping he becomes a more exceptional performer.

I reckon Joe Allen's going to get limited minutes this season, especially in the bigger games.

Henderson now has to start. Milner guaranteed to play centrally and has already stated this since joining the club. So that's Can, Lucas and Allen fighting it out for the more defensive slot.

I think we will see a very different Henderson now that Gerrard has finally left. More aggressive and certainly more willing to give players input when needed. Gerrard was a hopeless captain in terms of what he offered on the pitch to the players around him. Sulking more often than not.

The only fear is that the pressure will stun him.

I don't think it will stun him, it'll be interesting to see how he steps up, but I think maybe he felt a bit awkward while Gerrard was here. He looked full of passion and aggression within himself, while the real captain stood there subdued and disappointed in himself, still mulling over what might have been the season before.

Gerrard wasn't always a hopeless captain though, he lifted players in a different way, he did what Suarez did, what Kenny did, he got those around him punching above their weight and when it came to the massive games, he would pull the team out the shit and drive the team in that sense. There's different styles of captain, hopefully Hendo (and Milner) can prove a decent balance of composure and passion.

We don't have one player at the club who fits the bill of captain unfortunately.

Aside from Chelsea and one or two in the City side, there's very few teams littered with Captain material players nowadays. Can't think of many in United's or Arsenal's myself.

Agree. Hopefully he doesn't try too hard though - like mouthing off too much etc. Like you say, it's about getting the balance right. This is hardly surprising news, we've all known for ages he was in line for it.

That's cos 99% of footballers are completely immature bellends.

True statistical fact that.

Hendersons clearly captain material, he gives 100%, stands up for the team, isn't afraid to put his body on the line, isn't afraid to have a go at a slacking team mate, clearly carries the respect of the team, and has a level head. What more do people want? Him to score 30 yarders every other week?

He might rise to it, especially now that Gerard with the extra R has gone. Remember him staring down Costa last season? Costa backed off like a Jack Russell that had just picked a fight with a Rottweiler. That's the type of stuff he'll start doing more often this coming season.

I recall some years ago most of our team were "captains", in that they had been captain of a previous club or an international U21 side etc. Didn't do us much good then, so maybe a team with no captains will do better

Couldn't agree more. He's been acting like a captain for the last two seasons anyway.

I remember the incident but I'm afraid I saw it somewhat differently. To me Hendo looked as though he was almost forcing himself to do it. Costa's a bit of a bully and bullies quite often do back off when confronted, but Costa didn't seem scared to me, just a bit confused by what seemed a slightly artificial situation. So I hope Hendo doesn't start doing it more often, because I'm not sure it suits him all that well (and apart from anything else I hope he won't have to anyway).

Christ, Can we have some positivity on here!

Excellent news and well done to Hendo! I hope he's made up and goes on to be even half the legend our last Captain is.

There's plenty of positivity in this thread, I've backed Hendo as skipper in the past when there hasn't been, and I'm fine with him getting the armband. Few players excel at every aspect of captaincy and it's important that Hendo, like every skipper, does the job in a way which suits him.

I prefer my interpretation [emoji6]

Hendo always plays better when gerrard isn't on the pitch. He's definitely the right choice to be captain. He gives his all on and off the pitch...best choice.

Henderson will take the role very seriously.

Can anyone remember the warm up to the Sunderland game? (When Lazar had that silly volley) It was live on TV. Henderson went around to speak to each player individually. It was good to see. He will also stand up for his team mates on the pitch and won't be out fought.

He was probably the best choice. I'll support this decision and wish him well.

Joe Allen, now Henderson, I have a lot of time for our midfields new bearded look, mini Pirlo's indeed.
