From the Guardian:

Liverpool intend to keep Emre Can this summer, even as the Germany midfielder enters the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield.
Can has yet to commit to a long-term deal with Liverpool, despite several months of negotiations, and could leave on a free transfer when his contract expires in 2018. Liverpool, however, have no plans to sell the 23-year-old in the absence of a contract extension, believing his worth to Jürgen Klopp’s team next season is greater than the cost of buying a replacement.
Can is in a similar position to Everton’s Ross Barkley, who also has 14 months remaining on his contract. In contrast to Ronald Koeman, who has told Barkley to make a decision by the end of the season or be sold, Liverpool’s manager is willing to bide his time in the hope of finding a resolution with Can.
The former Bayern Munich academy player, who signed a four-year deal at Liverpool when he joined from Bayer Leverkusen for £9.75m in 2014, has claimed his role in Klopp’s team is behind the contract delay and not financial demands of £100,000 a week.
Can prefers a deeper midfield role to the more advanced position that, with its increased number of sprints, he blamed on the persistent calf problem that plagued him throughout the first half of this season.
He has been in commanding form in recent weeks as Liverpool attempt to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.
The prospect of Champions League football plus the nature of Can’s contract problem offers Klopp hope the midfielder will eventually follow the example of Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana in signing a new deal. Liverpool’s resolve to keep Can may yet be tested by a substantial offer in the close season.

Notice the part in bold. I always felt that the deeper role is a better long-term fit for Can and that's probably the main reason why he looked better in the recent weeks since Hendo has been out. I think he is the same type of player as Bayern's Javi Martinez, who started as a midfielder and even played up front at times (Guardiola tried to make him a 2nd striker a la Fellaini for a few games), but eventually found himself as a ball-playing CB.

What can Klopp do to keep Can happy and effective, while doing what's best for the team? One question that Klopp will have to think long and hard about in the offseason is whether it makes sense to built the "spine" of the team around Hendo if his injury problems turn out to be chronic and not fully solvable. The answer to that question may well determine Can's future.

Show Can clips of the occasions when in the holding role, he falls asleep tracking a midfield runner, leading to a goal attempt or goal.
Then tell him if he wants that role, he will have to improve on it and we'll work with him to get there.

Sign the contract.
Buy a new holding midfielder.

Then show Can the same clips again and tell him that's why we needed to buy a new holding midfielder as insurance.

He's been impressive of late but I don't see where he fits into the team long term as he isn't great at any particular role and can't see him holding down a regular position.

He's particularly lacking in games where we need to move the ball quickly to break down teams.
He takes too many touches, his first touch is ropey and his postioning is rubbish.

But Can's been playing better in a more advanced role, but with Lucas behind him instead of Hendo. His concentration level or game intelligence, or both, is not good enough for him to play the deep role.

That's a persistent myth that I will try my best to dispel using Morse's MOM thread as objective indicator of performance. As Rafa would say, let's look at the facts. Can has been voted MOM once this season (Man City away) and got second place twice (loss to Leicester and win vs Burnley). In all 3 of those games he played as the holding midfielder with Wijnaldum and Lallana ahead of him. Last season he got 3 MOM awards and 5 second places – in all but one of these games he played as the deepest of two or three midfielders.

Last season was overall much better for him and his upturn in form (first MOM performance after Swansea at home on 29/11/15, followed by a string of other highly rated performances) happened precisely at the time Klopp moved him from the advanced midfield position to the DM. This season has been less successful for him mostly because Hendo was preferred over him at DM from the start – as soon as Hendo got injured and Can was moved back to his preferred role, another upturn in form swiftly followed. I really don't know how much clearer it has to get: Can's best performances for this club have come at DM (and before that, as a RCB under Rodgers), not when he was asked to play further forward.

Sure, sometimes he lacks maturity and consistency that's required in this position, but that's going to come with age. How many mature proven top-class holding midfielders can you name who are aged 23 or younger? Where was Kante at 23? Usually players in this position don't reach full maturity until 25 or older and the best holding midfielders play well past 30. People say Can doesn't excel in any position, but for me the fact that his skills are so wide-ranging that he can take a crack at any position from CB to almost AM is evidence of his huge potential. His head and character are also in the right place and he's shown himself to be coachable. We would be fundamentally stupid to let a player like this leave 1-2 years before he enters the prime of his career.

Yep, said the same thing about a month ago.

Can's upside is far higher than the likes of Henderson in my view.

Extend the contract but there is no way he should be our starting DM until he proves he can track attacking runs and improve his first touch and passing. He's young and all of that could come in time, but not as our starting DM (I'm using this term to indicate our deepest laying CM) if we want to seriously challenge for trophies next season.

We are close to having a great forward line with maybe Brandt (or similar) and a striker. Our defence just needs another top-notch CB to challenge the Matip-Lovren partnership and a better LB than Milner, both eminently possible this Summer. CM is our greatest problem and although Wijnaldum is a shoe-in (IMO) the other two slots need to be resolved. Of course Naby Keita would be a mighty solution if it comes to pass. Henderson, Milner & Can all become high quality squad players and if we make the CL there will be plenty of games for all.

He'd be seen as a far better DM if we had decent centre backs playing every week.

I thought he was excellent last year as a holding mid. Plus as Rurik has pointed out, he's been playing mostly as a sitting midfielder whenever he's played well for us this year. Can, Keita, Wijanldum/Lallana would be a fine midfield.

There's merit in looking at Can instead of Henderson as a building block for our midfield. It seems Henderson's fitness cannot be trusted.

Plus let's not forget Can is 4 years younger. I also think his physical tools and technical ability are superior to Henderson's. Ryan is right - Can's upside is quite high. He's still only 23 - there's more development to come.

He should still improve all areas even if lying deep is his preference. Look at Milner... playing right or central midfielder is what he prefer, but is good enough to slot in at left back. Right decision to keep Can anyway. He will fight his way to the team and hopefully stay injuryfree and cement å place in the team.

Can came to us as a young player with only really one season of football under his belt looking for game time and development.

In the time he's been here, he's been played all over the shop both in defence and in midfield as our maddeningly inconsistent team attempts to find some kind of working formula.

And let's be fair, on the whole he's been pretty good. There have been periods of inconsistency but I'm far more inclined to cut Can some slack than others who are guilty of the same.

I think I made the comparison to Yaya Toure when he first arrived due to his physique, the positions he gets played in and what not - I'm not quite sure whether that comparison has been accurate - but it's clear that Can has almost everything you could ask for in a modern player in his locker. On top of that, he works really hard, gives 100% and clearly doesn't like losing.

I don't know whether he'll ever bring it all together and become a top class player but even if he doesn't, he'll still be a good player to have around.

Are we really in a position to let him go given the uncertainty over Henderson's fitness and priorities elsewhere?

ked the discipline to play dm this season (in a 2). I’m always fearful he running up field and leaving lots of space in behind. Not Lucas biggest fan but at least you know (like hendo) he will hold the position.

I definitely wouldn’t sell him, as we need a high quality squad. I’m just surprised (?) again that we get into another situation where we let a player get down to his last year of his contract, especially the tough talk following sterlings contract.

If you think your managers demands are responsible for your injury problems why do you renew your contract ?

If i was him with 12 months left on his deal, during which i turn 24 and become Bosman eligible, i wouldn't be signing unless i got everything i wanted.

I won't be surprised if he goes

Can is good on his day, but when he goes missing, boy, does he go missing. Which can be more than half the games he plays it seems to me.

If someone came in with a cheeky £20-25m bid this summer, and Can was no closer to signing a contract by that point, I think we should sell. He's not indispensable.

Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson will also miss the Palace game and Klopp has cast doubt over the latter’s availability for the remainder of the season. Henderson has been out since 11 February with a foot injury and unlike Lallana, who is expected to return to full training next week, the captain is not close to a return.
Asked whether Henderson could miss the rest of the campaign, Klopp said: “I don’t know. We will have to see. He cannot really train so we have to wait for when he can. That was always the plan with the medical department. He is not patient any more, I can tell you that. He looks really healthy but nothing has changed.”
