Can no do?

Good squad player who can become a first teamer. its a no brainer not to give hime a new contract.

Yes but not on a pay scale that messes up the salary structure. If that's what he wants he can fuck off. He's not that essential.

Not good enough, we should be aiming higher. It's another of those - would Emre Can get into the midfield of Chelsea, Man City, Spurs, Arsenal or Man Utd? Answer is no.

We have to allow room for Grujic coming through next year also. Grujic looks more naturally attack minded than Can. I think the Germans future has to be at defensive midfield. He's not technically skilled enough to engage in the interplay we want higher up the pitch.

Yeah and for me the difference between asking for 70k and 100k is significant.

For me when you get into 100k territory you need that player to be in the starting lineup regardless of the opposition.
I don't think we're there with Can but he still has that potential - so you can make a reasonable argument either way.

It's probably the opportunity cost of 100k a week that tips me against it

This. For 70K I was in the maybe territory given that Lucas is being 80K. 100K appears a bit too much.

I'd be keeping him. We've put 3+ years of development into him, and maybe I'm more optimistic than some - but he's got great upside. He can play, he's got great touch, he can hit a pass, and with a bit of coaching could improve his goal ratio. Big, strong, mostly fit, and has a decent attitude.

Why sell someone like that at the age of 23 for 15-20M odd? It makes no sense. Sure if you're going to replace him with someone infinitely better, but they're gonna cost 50M+ - which we don't have.

His best performances have come in the 6 role; away to United in the Europa, Dortmund, this week against Arsenal. That's his go. I think he's a better reactive player than a proactive one. I get that Henderson is a better player right now than him in that position, but Can's ceiling is higher than Henderson's.

The best DM's we've seen in England have traditionally been older players, players in their late 20's who've matured into that role. Hamman, Makalele, Vieira, Keane in his later years, etc. He mightn't get to their level, but with the right coaching, there's a mouldable player. Plus, he seems to have a bit of cunt about him, which is no bad thing in our team of vaginas.

Anyway, I might be overly optimistic about his upside, but if he were to play a full season (whilst fit) in the 6, then we'd have a player in my view. And there's more upside to that than getting 20M-odd for him now.

Yeah you're being overly optimistic.

"Can shares the same agent as Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud, who was a target for Liverpool last summer but is no longer on their wish-list."

Thanks for that, James. It's obviously really pertinent.

If Can is going to be our future #6 then we're fucked. He was a solid 3/10 today before the goal so a 4/10 it is. His passing and giving away of senseless fouls had even Lucas putting his head in his hands. Liking his combativeness is one thing ... but only if he has the skill-set to go with it and he clearly doesn't. I'm not reacting only to today's performance but of many over the course of the season.

This was the year he was supposed to step up .. well that hasn't happened, in fact he looks to have regressed so I'm not sure where any confidence about future growth comes from. We simply need better than him when Henderson isn't available though what we actually need is someone that can at least challenge, if not usurp, Hendo from his role, and that is never going to be Can. Move the team on ? Move Can on and find someone to take us to the next level.

Jurgen Klopp saluted Liverpool matchwinner Emre Can – and revealed the midfielder has been playing through the pain barrier for months.
Can struck shortly after the hour to complete a comeback from the Reds as they defeated Burnley 2-1 at Anfield to strengthen their grip on a top-four place.
It was the midfielder's first goal since December having struggled for consistent form as Liverpool have faltered in the New Year.
But Klopp praised his fellow German after a difficult period for the 23-year-old in which he has struggled to deal with an intermittent calf problem.
“Emre is a boy with an outstanding attitude,” said the Reds boss.
“He had a few problems with his calf in the last few months which we couldn't sort quickly enough because sometimes he had it and sometimes not.
“It was really difficult. We had a lot of specialists look at it to try to find out. We couldn't say 'go on holiday for four weeks and see if it gets better', we couldn't do that.
“It looks like we have found the solution now and he doesn't have the problems any more.”
Can – who is yet to agree a new deal despite approaching the final 12 months of his present contract – was among several players at fault for Burnley's opener, allowing Matthew Lowton the time and space to cross from the right for Ashley Barnes to put the visitors into a shock seventh-minute lead.

He's on 35k allegedly, and is looking for 70k.

He hasn't progressed as much as i thought he would have by now.

He's not looking like our DM of the future at the minute and the bits of his game that are good, which to me are his driving runs and general play going forward - we already have players who can do those things better than he can.

Sometimes i wonder should he be playing Centre back (in our back four) - his physical attributes suggest it but the rest of his game doesn't.

Spot on - I am still saying the same thing about Can that I was after a season- I remain to be convinced - and that being the case if he's stalling personally I'd get shut - Take today , yes he scored but the clumsy tackles are Lucasesque on several occasions- he's just not suited to Klopps style

It's because Lucas is always there for Can to emulate. Get rid off Lucas and Bobs your uncle. He'll find someone else to 'esque.

Scored a fantastic goal today to win the game for us, but prior to that his game and especially his passing was awful.

If you want 75k per week at least learn to find a man from 5 yards.

Sell him.

He isn't good enough and in this system he's never going to command a regular spot.

Too slow in transition, doesn't read the game well, takes too many touches, doesn't pass the ball nearly quick enough and doesn't perform at a consistent level.

Can anyone name a position he could make his own?

Sell
So ya still this.

He's got bits of class that are very evident but really struggles to link it together into a coherent game. The talent is there but it's not enough on current evidence.

So Emre not getting any leeway at all for playing through injury?

His positional sense (which was non existent for the entire first half) & the fact he failed to win a single header when their keeper continually lobbed it into the centre meant we were at a disadvantage continually in midfield.

His tackling was goddamn awful, & those occasions when he did get the ball he invariably fucked up a simple short pass & lost possession.

That said everyone was fucking shite today, & he can play much better.

He's still nowhere near convinced me he'll ever do a job for us in the DM position though.

I'm worried that Klopp sees something there that we don't. I think Rodgers was onto something by pulling him out of midfield into a back 3, where he was actually semi decent. That said, Klopp isn't rushing in to give him a contract, so that's sort of re-assuring

I'm also worried he's going to be our new Lucas - i.e. a player that's actually pretty one paced and average, yet clings around our first team for years.

He is not a DM and never will be. that said he has scored 5 goals this season and so should be kept.
