Seems like a strange choice.......

Burnley have confirmed Brian Laws as their new manager only a month after he was sacked by Sheffield Wednesday.

Laws has signed a two-and-a-half year contract and takes over at Turf Moor from Owen Coyle, who left the club for Bolton Wanderers last week.

The 48-year-old, who began his playing career with the club in 1979, is joined by Russ Wilcox, his former assistant at Wednesday, while Burnley captain Graham Alexander, 38, has been given a new role as player-coach.

Laws and Sean O’Driscoll, the Doncaster Rovers manager, were both interviewed over the weekend and met Burnley officials again yesterday. But Doncaster wanted £1 million in compensation for O’Driscoll while Laws was a free agent.

Although Laws appears to be a far from popular choice with the club’s supporters, he impressed greatly at the interview stage and has been given a first opportunity to manage in the Premier League.

A Burnley statement read: "We believe Brian will deliver a continuity of the culture to which Burnley fans and staff have become accustomed. As a former Burnley defender, he is especially familiar with the club, the traditions we have and the passion we all share."

It is a bit odd. I saw very little from his Wednesday team that would suggest he could cut it in the prem. I suspect that it is more to do with money and next season's expectations (re-promotion?) rather than being the best man for the job.

When he was manager of Scunthorpe in the bottom 2 divisions he was not hugely popular with the fans. He got them promoted to the Championship but they went straight back down and he was sacked and most fans were glad to see the back of him.

He was even less popular at Sheffield Wednesday and they struggled under him and when he was sacked after a couple of disappointing seasons their fans were not exactly upset.

So yes, a very strange appointment, almost an admission of defeat and acceptance of imminent relegation!

Can't see the re-promotion aspect counting for a lot after Sheff.Wednesday's performance in the Championship under him. I'm sure you're right about the money aspect though, and I expect his previous connection with the club played a part as well.

The thing is JJ, a little prem money and experience go a long way, Wednesday had neither.

I think youre right - but theres got to be hidden rationale here; either the chairman felt the clear need for a disciplinarian (and prioritised this aspect of management above all else) or he simply wanted the cheapest option available - either way if youre a Burnley fan youre not doing cartwheels are you?!

To me the whole thing smacks of an acceptance that the club do not belong in the premiership, and are looking to regroup in the Championship. The chairman couldnt go after the bigger names that are available as all of them would have expected guarantees around immediate funds and their powers to wheel and deal - instead theyve gone for someone who will simply work with what theyve got and wont make any demands on the board.

Didn't he throw a plate of chicken wings at a player once and also was accused of punching another player? So a poor man-manager and a very mediocre tactician. Very odd.

They were having a look at O'Driscol from Doncaster too.

I was quite worried - as im from Doncaster and like to see them do well! He's worked wonders with Rovers keeping them in the championship - i thought if it came down to a straight choice between him and Laws, he would get the job hands down.

Obviously im glad he didnt - i hope Burnley are preparing themselves for the Championship, cos theres no way he will keep them up!

Not sure where you got that from. He was well regarded at Scunthorpe, the fans appreciated what he had done and the club played its most exciting football in its history with Keogh and Sharp in tandem up front. He worked miracles there to be honest and he built the platform from which Adkins has been earning all the plaudits for.

Its the Grimsby Town fans who hate him.

I know Brian quite well and wish him all the best.

Whitey I used to go on the Scunthorpe forum when he was manager and even when he had them challenging for promotion to the Championship he was not overly popular with the majority of fans.

I have to admit it surprised me because Scunthorpe are traditionally a 2nd division team and he got them promoted to the 1st division and subsequently (albeit briefly) the Championship.

It's unfair to detract from Adkins achievements as Scunthorpe manager by suggesting Laws lay the foundations because most of the players there now were not there under Laws. Adkins got them promoted last season and I confidently predict he will keep them up this season.

He didn't get the nod because of Doncaster's £1,000,000 compensation claim.

Well if thats what it took to keep him, nice one. He's certainly worth it!

I worked for him at Scunthorpe and do so for Adkins now so have a decent idea what the feeling is around the place. I can only assume the forums you've visited are full of idiots who forget its a very small club punching well above its weight.

Laws was terrific in the transfer market bringing in Crosby - whos now the number 2 after a good career, Murphy, Beckford, Sharp, Keogh etc - that 4 there is £10m worth of talent brought in for fuck all. Adkin's himself has done a fine job and if he can keep Hooper fit he has every chance of keeping them up this season.

I know you're into your lower league footy. Anyone stood out for you this year? The best ive seen in the Championship this season is a lad called Dorrans at West Brom.

Dorrans looks superb so i was very disappointed in his performance on Friday against Forest. Having said that he was due an off day but he's definitely worth keeping an eye on.

I'm still a big fan of Jamie Ward at Sheffield United although he has had a few injury problems and he is still played out of position (wide left as opposed to where he should be played - up front with a target man) too often.

I've always been a fan of Coppinger at Doncaster. He too is a bit injury prone but he has enough talent for the EPL.

Also Lansbury at Watford (on loan from the Arse), Moses (obv) at Palace, Maynard at Bristol City. my favourite is still mcCormack at cardiff but strangely he is struggling to win his place back after injury - probably because he and Chopra are not ideal as a partnership - I think McCormack could be good enough for top 4 of the EPL!!!

Hooper and Hayes work well together at Scunny but IMO they should stick with a CM of McCann & Togwell. I am sure you if take Scunny's record when those two play together against games that they don't they score more points with the 2 in tandem. What do you do there?

Aye Lansbury is a good lad. Adkins had him on loan last season and he was exceptional.

Well yeah they are always going to be harder to beat with Togwell in the team because he gets stuck in and covers every blade of grass. Josh Wright in the middle can play and has surprised everyone this season. I think Villa and Newcastle have been sniffing around him but he strikes me as a McPhail type - he can pass a ball for fun but put him in prem and the pace the game is played at will maybe be too much for him.

I coach kids there at the moment. I just wish it paid more to do it as a fulltime job. I also do the occasional scouting but its hard finding the time these days so ive cut back on it big time.

will never forget the image of him scoring an own goal during a Forest v Liverpool game and John Alridge running back to ruffle his hair

Now Paul Hart has left QPR after just five games. Anyone who takes that job must be a major loon.

Was just about to post that.

Shit surface at the OT goalmouth didn't help him to be fair, but who gives a fuck really.
