That clear out from Souness doesn't seem so bad in retrospect actually.

Carter and Speedie weren't exactly first team regulars, and had hardly been here any time and he clearly thought he had replacements for Beardsley, McMahon, Staunton and Gillespie.

We still had quite a lot of the old players, the problem was that they all seemed to get injured.

Souness did fuck up but I think his changes behind the scenes were generally more damaging than the players he sold.

Mascherano seems a fairly obvious one given how good he was and how much he still has to offer.

I'm tempted to say Zeige too. Decent player who actually did have some good games for us but never quite seemed to fit in back then.

I'm too biased to comment on Litmanen so Babbel is the one who stands out. What a player and isn't it just our luck he gets a fucking one in a million disease while at his peak.

Anelka is an obvious choice too, what a major cock up by Ged that was. Oh and Rob Jones(although he was here for quite a while).

Riedle and Gary Mc are two who I'd have loved to have longer but also part of their magic is just that we only had them for a short time.
There was fuck all "magic" about Riedle
You mean he was 'slow' which always = shit player in your football A-Z?

Heggem and Litmanen are good shouts, I loved them both. Babbel is another good'un.

Riedle was slow and didn't score any goals. I didn't like him one bit.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Litmanen either. Talented, sure - but he was a crock, slow, and we never had any use for him. He was also pretty lazy.

For me:

Anelka
Bellamy
Mcmanaman
Owen

You have a weird interpretation of brief if you think McManaman wasn't with us for very long.

That's not what brief means.

I think you're answering the question: "Who did I not want to leave?"

I was 10.

And I probably knew more about football back then than I do now.

Titi Camara.

He scored a few crackers in his short time here.
Overstayed his welcome though IMO

Bernard Diomede.

He hit the bar with an overhead kick in one (of his few) games, and I thought we'd signed Jesus.

Alou Diarra. Looks like a solid cm now and was never given the chance here

We had Didi, Spud, Stevie G, Redknapp and later Gary Mac ahead of him. No wonder he never got the chance mate.

i know, i know

its just a bit shit how we had a plethora and now we have 2, and we let someone go who would have saved us some money. Same reason i suppose people mention wanting warnock back i suppose
It didnt hit the bar, the keeper dived down to his left to save it to stop us taking all 3 points in the last 2 minutes. And yeah it was fucking amazing.

Warnock's rubbish.
Warnock had a habit of switching off and his positional sense was poor. Rivals fans make out we left Maldini go the way they rave about Warnock.

Baines is twice the player.

Was that Sunderland at home, 1-1, Owen scored a header?
Yes. Kevin Phillips hit it from about 25 yards and then Owen equalised with a header and then bashed his head to suggest 'Look i score with my head' and then after the game the Sunderland Manager (whoever the fuck it was, Maybe Mick Mccarthy) says 'If it were Owen who scored that goal we would be saying how wonderful it was, but i doubt it will get mentioned' meanwhile everyone in the world said 'Wow what a goal Phillips scored'

It was Peter Reid.

I remember watching Patrick Berger score an amazing goal when I was 6 or 7and I decided that he was the best player in the world.
