Bottle, Losing Mentality, Nerve

Everyone (bar downing) took an extra touch in build up. Downing played some lovely 1 touch stuff

Do you think we've had more of those days this season, and why do you think that is? Is it because we're terribly unlucky?
Stephen Gerrard missing a spot kick and missing from 8 yards out is pretty unlucky yes.
We lack the cutting edge not the mentality. Sturridge's games have proven that.

We're a bunch of fucking pussies lets be honest. It's not one or two goals or one or two games - it's a regular occurence.

We give the ball away far too often, we choose the wrong option at the wrong time, we miss gilt-edged chances more than any other team(or so it seems anyway) we make basic defensive errors and switch off which cost us the game.

It's fucking infuriating.

That is correct, and that is not something you fix given a year or two.

So then... No manager could do it surely?

We need new defenders, ideally an older one at the end of his contract who's won at the highest level but is still capable of good performances

SCOUTS!
GO!

Sorry, I put it badly. It will not be fixed over a year or twoplaying like we do. We need to adress the style of play, the way we appear as a team. I enjoy the good trashing of Fulham and Norwich as much as anyone else, but it is a bit naive to assume that in a year or two that style will work against strong teams as well.

For years now, every time we concede a corner or free kick I expect the opposition to score.

I'm not even surprised when we concede anymore.

I can't figure it out, how can a club with so many experienced players and coaches be so unable to get some of the seemingly basic skills right? All but Enrique in defence are from the Benitez era when we were much less likely to concede, what has happened to make them so inept?

It's bad enough that we have difficulty scoring without our latest signing but the inability to cope in defence is baffling.

We need 2 central defenders who don't constantly fuck up, and play well together. This will sort out a lot of our problem. Yes, we need a DM too, but with a more reliable back 4, the need for a DM would be reduced greatly. If we stopped conceding stupid shite goals, our confidence wouldn't be nearly as bad. Hence, problem solved. We are scoring goals again. Our attack is much better than last season (although Suarez does need a rest). WBA was an exception to the rule. You'll always have games where you dominate, but the ball just doesn't want to go in the fucking net. This was one of those games. But when you start conceding stupid goals as well, it's a disaster.

Bottom line is, if we stop conceding stupid goals, we'll have our bottle back.

I think Rodgers and the coaching staff have to take some responsibility for our defensive frailties. Every time a team counters us I always look through my fingers cause we make even the most inept teams look dangerous. The shape of the back four just seems to be all over the place and the all look nervous as fuck. Obviously poor form is a big factor but I think losing Clarke was a huge detriment to to the club in a defensive aspect.

Agreed.

Two new (top) class centre halves should be or priority. Someone like Hummels et al.

Rodgers in todays Mirror:

“The biggest thing we need this summer is to bring in some men, some character that allows and supports the other men to see the games out,” Rodgers admitted.

“That is the reality of it - we haven’t been good enough. In order for us to be up there consistently we need to improve in terms of our mentality.

“Technically we are very capable, tactically we have not been found wanting, the condition and intensity of their work is high so that only leaves you one thing - mentality. That is the area which needs to improve and to do that we need character.”

In a nutshell.

If we need 'some men' in the summer it's a sad sign of the state of the squad. How few 'men' are already on the books and what is to be done with all the rest? Sold? Shot? Shouted 'BOO!' at? Most of the current XI played in highly pressurised semi finals last season and seemed to cope. There's definitely something wrong with the general attitude at the moment but this needs working at. You can't replace them all.

"...tactically we have not been found wanting,..."

Er, yes we have. All season long. Set pieces still trouble us, and strong runners from midfield continue to terrify us. Sometimes (and especially when Suarez is off his game) it feels like watching Roy Evans' defensively frail Liverpool, except without the joy of flowing attacking football instigated by mercurial talents like God and McMoneyman.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is planning a summer clear-out as part of phase two of his rebuild.
The Irishman could dump up to five of his current first-team squad to make space for new signings.
Goalkeeper Pepe Reina, defenders Martin Skrtel and Jose Enrique, and midfielders Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing are all in danger of the axe.
All five started Liverpool’s 2-0 Europa League defeat at Zenit St Petersburg, which underlined the fact more changes need to be made.
Liverpool will also let Sebastian Coates leave and look for a buyer for Andy Carroll, who has been on loan at West Ham.
Rodgers will hope the sales will help him fend off bids for Luis Suarez – and sign more players of his own.
An Anfield source told Sunday Mirror Sport: “The manager has now imprinted his style of play on the club, but next season will be more important in terms of results.
“There are a lot of talented players at Liverpool, but the club needs people with strong mentalities who can perform under pressure.”
Rodgers will concentrate on his defence.
Jamie Carragher is retiring and he may also look to replace the struggling Skrtel.
The Slovakian could be offered a move back to former club Zenit in a £12million deal, which would allow Rodgers to bid for Swansea captain Ashley Williams.
Reina’s rush of blood cost Liverpool victory against Manchester City and has intensified Rodgers’ search for a new keeper.
The Spaniard, who has been at Liverpool since summer 2005, may also decide it’s time for him to move on.

Ashley Williams. Fantastic news. As we missed out on Gylfi and Dempsey, lets for gods sake hope we land Ashley Williams.

I dont buy this mentally weak stuff either, if the team lacks belief then to be fair they have good reason too, i dont have much faith in them either! Fark was spot on with the first post, talking about belief when you are stumbling from one defeat to a draw snatched from victory time after time suggests to me we dont have the players and/or the system right.

I dont believe we lost to west brom twice or villa because we lacked confidence we lost because we are simply not very good.
