Three points between 18th and 7th, but this is a tough game, they've been playing really well of late (especially in their performance against United) and Elmander is a quality player who is complimented well by Davies, both are a handful for most asides, especially at the Reebok.

If Roy has any sense(!!!!) then he'll stick with a winning side and not be tempted to put Poulsen back in the lineup just yet and certainly not at the expense of anyone but Lucas. I really hope we don't try that drastic partnership ever again, and the Brazillian played well at the weekend and supported the attacks well so he should keep his place because I don't think there's any debate to be had about whether we'll play at least one DM.

--------------Reina-----------------
Carra--Skrtel-Kyrgiakos-Konch
---------Lucas-Meireles----------
-Maxi-------Gerrard-----Cole----
------------Torres------------------

Completely agree, Mark. The same lads should be given the chance to get a nice run going.

Yeah, Bolton have been doing well this season. They've only lost once, and have scored in every match they've played since the season-opener.

I suspect it'll be a draw. Especially if Hodgson plays his usual, over-cautious away side.

Lucas did play well by his standards, but I don't really agree with "supported the attack well". He showed willing to get into decent positions BUT, as per usual, he fluffed any chance he got to finish something off. Some of his passing was good and on current form I'd stick with him in preference to Poulsen (though that's more a comment on Poulsen than it is on Lucas), but preferably I wouldn't have either in the starting line-up. Somewhat reluctantly I'd probably agree about sticking with the same side for the moment, but when Deadly's fit again I'd have him on the left of the three, Cole behind Torres, and Gerrard alongside Meireles.

I can't imagine Maxi making much impression in an away game at the Reebok so would personally play Jovanovic for some extra strength and pace but in principle I agree with the notion to keep the same lineup just to attempt to get some form back.

Gerrard is a fucking hopeless option as a centre mid, one of the most irritating things about Sky and the English media is their insistence that Gerrard's natural home is in the centre of the park. Is it bollocks! He has no discipline and the team's shape disintegrates when he plays there. He is a marvellous off-striker as he has shown in the past few years, and he also scored a bunch as a right mid, he is way more effective when he doesn't have the responsibility of dictating the game and making the team tick.

The absence of Alonso (and to be fair Hamman and McAllister before him) has obviously created a huge deficit in the level of game intelligence in our side. I am actually quiet confident that Meireles can step into that gap, I'd like to see a really top-class holding mid/destroyer beside him - or else drop Meireles back into the holding role and play Shelvey right in the middle with Gerrard and Torres in front of him and Jova/Cole and Cole/Kuyt on as advanced wide forwards. Babel has had his chance to run, to tackle, to give a flying fuck and he just stands there waiting for things to happen, the guy is absolutely maddening and should be ditched ASAP.

What, like in Istanbul, you mean? Shelvey's a good shout and I'd certainly look at playing him alongside Meireles, but this stuff of yours above is well OTT.

bolton will be where the usual roy turgid tactics return, washing away the anomaly of the b'burn game.
we'll flood the midfield with holding midfielders and sit deep letting the mighty bolton have the lion's share of possession also giving them an open invitation to cross into our box despite only one of our center backs being good in the air. when the rare oppertunity to break on the counter presents itself, we'll commit a handleful of players all of whom are slow as shit giving bolton all the time in the world to get back and reorganise.

this game has 'draw' written all over it...

I've an uneasy feeling you could well be right. If that does happen, let's at least hope it brings the day closer when Roy is let go.

Bolton away at the moment is the perfect acid test to see if the Blackburn game was as positive as it looked.

If we lose we are back to square one.

I would still love to see Babel on the right and Shevley start.

Hahahaha

We went 3-0 down at Istanbul and Gerrard was overrun in the centre of the park - it was only when Hamann and Alonso took the centre and he pushed forward that we started getting somewhere - plus he ended the game at right back.

I love Steven Gerrard as a footballer, but to say that his best position is in centre midfield is daft.

Not as daft as saying he's "fucking hopeless" at it.

You've been on RAWK too long mate. Go and cleanse your brain.

I'm undecided - it depends on what Liverpool turns up.
[/quote]

I think the 87/88 side are busy that afternoon.

Ha. You know what I mean. If we go with the same negative two DM formation we've used for the last 18 months then yeh we're fucked. If we play like we did for the first hours or so on Blackburn we'll have a chance.

I actually agree with most of this.

You've gone a bit mental with your "fucking hopeless" chat, but I do agree with the general thrust of your argument. I wouldn't have him in centre midfield either.

Thirded. Gerrard isn't fucking hopeless there at centre midfield but i would say if we want to get the most out of the team, play Gerrard at right wing or as a support striker.
