In a time when the discussions are dominated by new players who may join the Reds, I was reminded this evening of a player who played his part in some memorable games in our recent past including that magical evening in Istanbul.

When I remember John Arne Riise playing for Liverpool, I still marvel at the sheer violence of that free kick vs UTD. In the words of Andy Gray, have a look boys!

I love that goal.

He was a good player for us and a part of our best defence in the last 20 years

Sold him a year too late for me but we all differ in opinion.

FK vs Manure has to be Spud

Those two Chelsea matches especially the one in London when he gave up, was his end.

But it doesn't matter because he was a legend! Great guy, servant and now fan.

Top player for us. Had his limitations but used his attributes to great effect. Always gave 100% as well.

Comes across as a great guy too.

There's a certain amount of revisionism going on about Johnny Rockets nowadays. His defending was never all that - opposition teams knew it and regularly targeted him for it. IMO the fact that he was part of such a good defence is due largely to the fact that he had one of our best-ever players in big Sami covering behind him.

That said, he wasn't as bad as his main detractors claimed either. Enrique on form is better defensively, but IMO he's less consistent.

Agree with all that except the consistency part.

He was largely shite.

I can see why your average clueless fan took to him. Passionate, shot from long range, could kick the ball really hard and stuff, and kissed the badge lots. He was like a fan on the pitch really.

Not to mention he scored a shed load of goals against Chelsea.

Totally unnecessary that. I don't think anyone in this thread claimed that Riise was a world class left back.

He was a good solid squad player who gave us many wonderful moments. Also nothing wrong in being like a fan on the pitch.
