The giant on whose shoulders all of us have stood ever since - including Ferguson, who consciously took Shanks as his professional model.

Every so often I wonder whether or not I have over eulogised Shanks in my mind as I was a kid when he was manager. I almost convince myself that no man can possibly be THAT charismatic, THAT integral to a major football club, THAT integral to a major city and THAT good a manager. But this letter is further evidence that Shanks was all THAT and more.

Such a down to earth man. He really instilled his persona into this club and it should never be forgotten.

Fantastic read.

I love those sort of pieces that just give an insight into the man.

I know some argue for one of his successors (and they have some valid arguments) but, for me, he's the best manager we've ever had. According to my grandfather he was an absolutely cracking player in his day as well - one of the best of his generation if you believe those who watched him.

Yes, I'd vote for Shanks as our greatest ever too, and his playing ability seems survived the transition to management, inasmuch as he used to take part in five-a-sides in training and insist they continued until his side won. 😀

I met him in the Lord Nelson Hotel one April Sunday in 1973. He was there having lunch with his family. He chatted to me and a couple of friends for about five minutes, and introduced his wife and I think it was his daughter and son in law. I got his autograph but it went missing some years later. Of course not one of us had a camera.

Ah, pinhole cameras werent all that anyway, were they?

There are so many "managers" out there thinking high about themselves and talking about how fucking good they are... Shankly, Paisley and Kenny just raised above it all and were the greatest.

Exactly. Fuck this spirit of Shankly shit, let's get the actual Shankly stickied.
