Where does Van Dijk currently rank among his peers in the league? Would you swap him for anyone else?

Who are the alternatives? We have the two at Spurs, Vertonghen and Alderweireld? Maguire at Leicester?
I can't really make a case for any of them over Big Virg right now. I'm probably forgetting loads.

There's maybe a couple who are around or near his level, but not any I can think of who I would swap him for.

Which you would hope is the case given he's the most expensive defender in the world.

I like how Van Dijk rocked in and the price tag seemed irrelevant to him. It might weigh a different player down but not Big Virg.
I hadn't seen much of him before he signed, was he always at this level or has elevated his game to another level around better players?

I can't pretend I studied him closely, but whenever I did see him play, I remember being impressed and I thought he was an excellent player.

He totally owned Firmino in a game against Southampton, I remember that. We couldn't get past him at all, he was imperious.

VVD Is excellent.

The only defender I would rate up alongside or above him is that Varane at Real...

Who had a mare the other night...

He's brilliant, and he's got more to show of his game. He can start more attacks, he can score more goals from corners, and he can absolutely blast shots in from free kicks. So, fingers crossed, he'll impress even more as the season progresses. But some players don't just shine, they also stamp their signature all over their area of the pitch, and he's done that. It's great that we waited for him and didn't give up.

It has all been said, but he just exudes that incredible air of calm authority that has had an extraordinary effect on our team. He was exactly what we needed, not just a great physical specimen, but a leader of men- he's as alpha as it comes. You just look at him and know Daddy is taking care of business.

He's up there with pre-injury Kompany, back when everyone was forming an orderly queue to kiss his arse and sing his praises

there's nobody close in the league right now

i woulndt be interested in a direct swap for anyone in world football, never mind this league

He has very quickly become even better than he ever looked at Southampton. What a guy. He has transformed the team.

Alderweireld maybe?
He doesn't have the leadership qualities does he, and at 6'1" he's not the giant at set-pieces that big Virg is? I think a fully fit Kompany has the leadership, but I don't think there are any defenders that combine the physicality with leadership in the way big Virg does. Gary Neville compared his arrival in the Liverpool backline with the effect Staam had when he came to united. That's the kind of comparison I think he warrants.

Based on an admittedly very small sample so far, Gomez in particular looks to be benefiting big time from playing alongside him.
Yep. Those three (Allison, VVD & Gomez) are so fucking calm & collected its unreal.

Lovely to see.

Gomez will mistakes cos he's young, but fuck it, Lovren will make mistakes cos he's Lovren, & Gomez suits our style of play much better, plus we know he has another level to come as he gets more experience, whereas Lovren doesn't.

Let's face it, if you want to blood a young CB, doing it alongside one of the best CB's in the world, with a keeper who can always take the ball at his feet to relief pressure, & has Keita always showing for the ball in front of him, is absolutely perfect.

Not to disagree exactly, but IMHO Virgil is a far better player. Stam was very quick after the first ten yards but a nippy striker playing on his shoulder could do him during those first ten (Owen did it more than once and Baros made a monkey out of Stam too one time in an international). He could get up to really high balls but had a 50-pence-piece head so his clearing headers went all over the place. Last but not least his distribution, including from dead ball kicks, was poor. None of that applies to Virgil. I always thought Stam's success owed as much to the fact that few ever dared to attack that United side as it did to his own qualities.

VVD is a fucking monster. I knew he was good but didn't think he was THAT good. Hope Gomez is able to stay fit and get a run in the team.

I was thinking about this the other day. He's certainly the best in league. In fact any club in the world would want him. Sure 75Mill but that bought Pace, Skill, Strength, Good in the air, position and general defensive nous but crucially he's also a leader (future captain for sure) - He also seems a genuinely nice fella. If anyone sky+ed the game on Monday check out him at final whistle. He went straight up to Gomez. Had a few words in his ear and you could tell he was congratulating him and just being ace. The only blot on the landscape as far as I can see is that injury he had. I fucking hope that doesn't happen again soon because frankly he's irreplaceable.

Dissension is allowed JJ. I suppose Ratboy was probably referencing the calmness and organisation that Staam brought to Utd.

yeah, it is. obviously theres an argument for who is better of of virg and varane etc, but there are other things to take into account such as communication. i have no idea if Varane speaks english and if he doesnt, it would be a lot to ask of him to come in and immediately lead this defence
