New deal.

Unusual in many ways. Why did he sign to be 5th choice?

Why did he not get offers elsewhere?

Will he be first choice by Xmas?

That's really strange. This is going to be another Origi, isn't it? His value will plummet without playing time, and he'll have no real interest in taking a paycut and moving elsewhere.

Good to know we've got the depth, and it means we'll get top whack if we do sell him down the line.

Perhaps so, but I think Phillips is more of a self-motivating type who will keep his form and fitness up whether he’s playing or not. I can’t help but be a bit chuffed with this to be honest, even if my brain says it might not work out, I just like Phillips as a player and am glad he has a chance to continue his career at Liverpool.

No problem with Phillips staying. Gives us great depth now at CB.

The thing is that apparently now we can't buy players unless we generate funds through sales. So if the idea was to cash in on him, this summer was probably the best time to sell him.

Good for him. Means we'll get £20 million when the other teams start getting desperate.

Yep, me too. Love a player who understands his limitations and plays with total commitment, throwing his head and body at everything.

Having watched Arsenal defend at the weekend, they could really do with a defender like that.

This 100%. A bit of light at the end of no signings.

He was available for £15m this summer according to reports, and nobody was interested. Why would his value increase 30% by never playing a game outside of the League Cup.

For who? Because if he's playing for us regularly then there's been another train wreck of injuries
Matip. I think beside VVD he would step up another level. He’s the primary reason we got third last year imo. He was sublime. For me he deserved to start the season next to VVD and stay there unless he made some big mistakes.

He’s way slower than Matip though, and I prefer both our center backs to be at least reasonably quick due to our ultra high line.
Would not care at all if Nat came into the team due to injuries or whatever as he’s great at what he does, but he’s 5th choice for a reason.
