Big Four now a Big Six!!

Has the much cliched "Big Four" now become a "Big Six"?

Just looking at the table you can see the mancs, Arsenal and Chelsea in the top four. They've been there for a number of years now so it really isn't a surprise to seem them in that part of the table. But in 2nd place is city and in 5th - level on points with Chelsea - is Spurs. Beneath them - though 8 points off the pace - is where we sit. Unless Sunderland can somehow keep going right to the end of the season, I think there's going to be a significant gap to 7th place.

We all know that City and Chelsea have a huge bank balance behind them and, short of FIFA regulations, nothing much looks likely to drop them down the table. Spurs have been building to this for several years and - the reputation of their manager apart - look to be an exceptionally well run club who can keep performing at this level for some time to come.

Assuming we can continue to improve are we now going to find that none of the prior "big four" can assume a place in the CL each year? Chelsea are already holding on by their fingertips and if Arsenal suffer the same fade as previous seasons they'll be in the same boat.

Do you think this is a long term situation for the league - a Big Six fighting it out amongst themselves each year?

Is it a good thing for us and the game here or would we be better off with the "Big Four" remaining standard?

It'll take more than just one and a half seasons for Citeh and Spurs to really be classed together with the other four. Granted, they've both done well so far and seem to be willing to open their purses to push their claims, but it's not how big you are (erm your squad that is) but how you long you can last that counts. 😀

Everton, Villa, Bolton have all had decent shouts in one or more seasons in the last decade but look where they are now. Give Citeh and Spurs a few more seasons and if they're still up there in the top 6, we can say that the formerly exclusive club has now opened to take in 2 more members.

Those 3 had nothing like the resources or squads that City and Spurs have though. I think they'll stay up and put pressure on the traditional big 4 (or 3).

Hopefully we continue to improve under Kenny and get further investment in the summer (without losing key players, like Reina) or we may find it difficult to keep up with the other 5.

City are going nowhere, so we'll just have to see about ourselves and Spurs.

It's looking like it's going to open up a bit more though (particularly if the new financial fair play regulations aren't as useless as I reckon they'll be) and that can only be good for the league. Not so good for us though.

Why do you say City are going nowhere?

They've a good squad, some quality players and if they stopped focusing on buying cunts or trying to buy all the strikers in the world, they've the makings of a very good team.

Plus Mourinho's doesn't seem to be happy at Real and I'm sure there was an article recently where he said he wouldn't have a problem joining them. With that current squad and their resources, imo Mourinho could take them to the title like he did with Chelsea.

Agree completely. Selfishly, from a Liverpool perspective, this is not good. The year-in, year-out revenue and prestige of Champions League football is necessary to compete at the highest level of the game. On the other hand, it makes the league far more exciting. But I don't give a fuck about that if we're not reaching our goals.

The term 'big 4' is a by-product of the CL qualification system rather than a term used to describe likely title winners.

Not being in it any more is like a relegation. If the impossible happened and we got to fourth it would be massive for the club, for signings, for the chance to grow next year, etc.

Its a big 4 cos they will be the champions league clubs. We have looked the most likely to slip out and I'd suspect Spurs will be the other team.

Its down to us to steal one of the places back ASAP if we want to be considered in the big 4.

But 6-7 clubs with champions league aspirations is going to make it a very competitive league.

I think we are on the up and will get one of the spots back. We should be the biggest club in England along with Man U and probably Arsenal...the rest can buy sucess for periods of time, but I hope they go back to where they belong once the money and success drys up.

There is nothing big about Chelsea!

Except their playing roster!! :🙂

I'm well aware that the "Big 4" term was coined to refer to CL qualification. The point of the title was a play on that terminology for what now looks, to me, a league within the league.

As I've said in other threads I think we and Spurs are the two teams most likely to grow further. The mancs I expect will continue to be there or thereabouts and Arsenal have got a good model as well. Chelsea and City are the two teams who look most likely to suffer under FIFA regulations. If they find a way to continue, however, then there will be six clubs with realistic expectations of making the CL. I would expect that the clubs - unless they want to follow the example of Leeds - will have to be more cautious in their spending to allow for the possible failure of reaching the CL. This is the point I wonder about; I think this will potentially weaken the clubs in the epl, therefore reducing their success in Europe and so weakening the EPL in general.

I agree with you 🙂 It is tighter now. And it is a shame to see the poorest United team in decades setting a new club record for unbeaten run. It is also devastating to think what if. What if we had Kenny from the start of the season. Would we still have Mascher? We would defo not have Poulson.... And maybe not Carroll either... Hmmm A lot of what ifs, but the race for 19 would defo still be on!!

I think Spurs may have a problem next year if...

a) they do not get in the CL this year

b) Harry takes England job

Spurs have grown in stature after their performances in CL and if Harry left they might well be able to attract a better manager to replace him.

We have been in the Finals twice in the last 5 years, and we got Roy HodgePodge

Haha, point taken.

But seriously, we were a mess at the time. Spurs on the other hand are in excellent shape at the moment.

Insig : very unlikely, Masher had been whining about leaving since summer 2009.
[/quote]

I know. he would probably been gone. But never replaced by Poulsen.

But we defo wouldnt have been out in the league cup that early, nor would we have lost all those games.... But as I say, we would probably not have signed Carroll either, and we defo wouldnt have all the bad experiences under Roy putting our lives into some perspective, so maybe (just maybe) we would have been higher placed but still bitter 8)
