Best World Cup Stat so far

He was still shite

Great come back 😀

The argument was he hasn't done anything at any World Cup.

He didn't just perform at the last World Cup, he won the player of the tournament and had all the stats to back up the win.

To say 'he was still shite' is a load of hoop obviously

Anyway I've easily made my point on Messi at the last WC so I'll leave it there

Fifa president Sepp Blatter says he was "a little bit surprised" Lionel Messi was named the World Cup's best player. Blatter believes Messi was given the award on the strength of his four goals during the group stage.

Argentina legend Diego Maradona also felt Messi was a surprise choice, claiming Colombia's James Rodriguez performed better in Brazil.
Maradona, who was named the best player when Argentina won the World Cup in 1986, said "marketing people" had chosen the wrong man and called the decision "unfair".[quote/]
Diego Maradona and Sepp Blatter; purveyors of truth.

Messi scored 4 goals in the group stages against Bosnia, Iran, and Nigeria. He did not score a single goal in the knockout. Zidane and Forlan scored important goals in the knockouts, including the quarter and semifinals. Nobody is comparing Forlan to the level of Messi. While Zidane does not statistically match up Messi, his contributions on the biggest stage is significantly better than Messi.

Goals are only one of the stats he tops as you can read.

And again not exactly comparing him to Zidane, merely pointing out the argument that he has never done a thing at a WC as a load of hoop.

He won player of the tournament for God's sake.

Messi; the ultimate flat track bully?
Um no. He's one of the best ever. Just because he didn't win the world cup doesn't diminish that. Just like the fact that because Gerrard didn't win the league, he couldn't be debated as our greatest player alongside Kenny.

He's scored against pretty much every team he's ever played.

Just enjoy him and the winker while they are playing. Despite their tax dodging ways.

I didn't see Maradona and Pele et al play, but I honestly can't come to any other conclusion that Messi is the best ever.

His numbers have been insane for a decade in arguably the best league in the world. He's won everything at club level - a more accurate barometer of a player's ability than international football these days.

Where I believe he has the edge over Cristiano Ronaldo (I'm probably biased) is his all-round play. His technical play, his passing, his dribbling, his teamwork. Ronaldo is a freakishly efficient athlete with ridiculous numbers too, but Messi is the better pure footballer.

Zidane was one of my favourites ever, but he didn't have Messi's scoring prowess. Original Ronaldo didn't come close to Messi's numbers and was blighted by injuries. Pele only played in Brazil. Maradona doesn't have Messi's numbers in Europe or his longevity.

If there's any doubt, just watch him play for any sustained period (not in this dreadful Argentina side). His finishing, his vision, his dribbling, his passing, his touch. He's a freak.

Ronaldo’s not at all enjoyable to watch though, unlike the real Ronaldo.
Messi is quite brilliant. I wish he’d have stopped trying so hard to do everything on his own for Argentina. That’s been his downfall at international level.

The arguement for Maradonna that's hard to beat is that he did in an era where two footed tackles, tackles from behind and general rough kicking of skillful opponents was standard. He was fouled on average once every 110 seconds at one stage in his career.

Machine and hard as fuck

He also played in an era when he could spend more time in the nighclub than the training ground and still play a match. Same with George Best, weak mentally, would have crashed and burned in modern football.

But yes, tough as fuck. I remember a Spanish defender one time saying Maradonna was the hardest player ever. Not because he was an enforcer or scary but because no matter what anybody did to him, he knew they were going to try and break his legs in every game, he didnt care refused to be intimidated. He said 'do your worst' and demanded the ball against even the filthiest teams.

That's where I stand on the matter too.

If you were to construct the perfect modern footballer in a lab, it'd be C.Ronaldo.

But in terms of the things that I like to see in football, I've never seen anyone better than Messi.
