Raul Meireles was today named the PFA Fans' Player of the Year for 2010-11.


The Liverpool midfielder beat off competition from a number of other Premier League stars to scoop the accolade in his debut season in English football.

Since arriving from FC Porto in August, Meireles has established himself as a key player for the Reds, making 37 appearances and scoring five goals so far this term.

All of his goals have come since Kenny Dalglish returned to the club as manager in January, including the winner against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

"Raul has always had the ability he has shown recently," commented Dalglish.

"Maybe he's settled down a little bit and is more comfortable and confident because he is playing well but there's been nothing drastic [tactically] for any of the players really.

"It is fantastic to see Raul doing so well. He has always been a talented footballer, he's always had what we are seeing now but it's been trying to get it out and it is coming out now and he's scoring goals."

Personally I think its a toss-up between Kuyt and Meireles.

on his day it's no question for me. Mereiles is stupidly clever and works for the team. He just needs to be more consistent

and stop bottling out of tackles

I'm happy with this choice. He hasn't been as stellar lately compared to their purple patch he had earlier, but he still moves the ball around very well for us, and his runs and movement to find space for himself are very understated.

Young player would be Kelly, without question.

Most improved player would be Lucas, also without question.

And Biggest Gonads Player - Kuyt of course.

I'd be sorely tempted to vote for Suarez (4 MOTM votes out of 6 games is an amazing strike rate) but Meireles is a fair shout.

Oops, wait... hang on. I mistook this to be a club fans' vote. It's actually a vote from fans for players across all clubs?

Wow. That is a remarkable achievement for Raul, really chuffed for him.

Thought he's been very good for us, but I think he's not dominated and been so head and shoulders above others like some of the past winners have been. Does say something about the level of talent or performance of the star players this season across the league.

Still, great accolade. More to come from him!

dont think thats the case this time around HC, look at the previous winners - no way would any of us vote for rooney et al.

He really seems to get the recognition - unexpected but welcomed non the less.

I'm not surprised, my arsenal mates love Raul (and Suarez and even Carroll) in a jealous and longing way. Its further proof of how top class they are.

Yes! I took a glance at the topic title and thought that it was just a vote between our fans for a LFC player of the year, but then re-read the article again and hell no, it was everyone.

He's good but to be considered the best by a national fanbase is incredible. This will make his confidence sky rocket

Yeah guys, this isn't just us, this is the whole league. Pretty stellar accomplishment, and I think he deserves it!

Kompany and Nasri have been the stand out players this season, but Meireles has had an impressive debut season given everything that's happened at the club and the many positions he's been asked to cover. I am surprised that other fans have recognised and appreciated this.

Apparently there was a campaign to vote for Meireles on every LFC fan forum but this one.
And we do have one of the biggest fan-bases in the world.
