top 5 this season
1. Salah v City
2. Salah v Watford
3. Thiago v Porto
4. Naby v Palace
5. Trent v Newcastle

If we're talking quality of goal, Fowler against brann Bergen.

If we're talking emotional reaction, it's harder

I actually think the most emotional was Benayoun vs Fulham, last kick of the game, back in 2009.

It looked like it might win us the title, and I went absolutely fucking mental.

The second is probably Origi vs Spurs in the CL final. Again a horrible stress reliever, and basically won us the cup.

I'm not sure about the best but the Fowler one is obviously up there. Maybe the Suarez one vs Norwich where he's juggling the ball over defenders and just smashes it in from 25 yards.

Gary Mac’s free kick Vs Everton should be in with a shout too - the one everyone thought would be a cross and he curled it in the bottom left corner.

There’s also a Fowler goal against Villa in an FA Cup game where he flicked it between his legs with us left, turned and immediately cracked in to the top left hand corner with his left.

I think there’s a Dalglish goal against Arsenal where he does something similar.

I remember a cracking volley from rush against West Ham, couple of Beardsley crackers were he danced round people.

Gerrard against Man Utd from distance.

Who was the scouse striker that looked a bit like Gerrard - never really made it by scored a ducking belter from distance in the last minute.

JAR Vs United… even that fat Italian left back scored a cracker against Utd.

In fairness some of those goals are there because of their importance at the time and the memories they evoke, not necessarily because they were great goals. But it was fab to watch them back anyway.

Happy days. 😀

Yeh totally agree ..
The many reasons for a goal being great … 🙂

At that rate, if (Heaven forbid) we ever hit a striker injury crisis we could do worse than fetch Kelleher into goal and stick Alisson up front.

It's the whole context of it though. The injury time last gasp goal. An amazing header. The importance of it. The fact it was a goalkeeper that did it and the fact it was Allison who scored it. Given what had happened to him - His post match interview damn near had me in tears. It was a beautiful and I have to say...... A divine moment.

Actually I have to say Allison’s goal was the ultimate pisstake. It was the only goal scored by a goalie and the way and timing it was scored, surely has to be the best ever.

Shame it was without the fans.

Doesn't best mean highest quality?

Allison's goal was just a very decent header. It's probably not in the top 500 we've ever scored.

Yeh. The title ‘best goal’ needs changing.not sure what to.
it was mentioned at the start of the thread about ‘best goals, /‘important goals’ / goals that meant something, highest quality goals etc can be interpreted in so many ways ..
agree with ya

Most of the goals in the top ten decided are by virtue of them being in cup finals or other huge significance. I guess people are voting on emotions. If you played a video of Salah or Suarez's top ten goals, on an objective measure it would batter most of the goals in that official list.

I know, it annoys me because I'm so pedantic.

I actually tried to work out a list of the best goals since I've been a fan. I started with the 92/93 season cos there just happened to be a video of all the goals.

Fuck me the quality was abysmal. I think literally the only good goals were scored by Rush. It must be mostly that team rather than the era, cos our stuff from the 70s and 80s is still brilliant.

Just to be a bit pedantic here myself - why the hell does "best" goals have to mean those of the highest quality? Why is "goals that trigger the most positive emotion" not a good measure of what is "best"?

Is your best friend the person you know of the highest quality? I somehow doubt it or we would all be best buddies with mother teresa or someone like that

Now - what about "world class" ....

Er I'm pretty sure best really does just mean something like 'highest quality' tbh... especially when not part of a particular phrase like 'best friend'.

"most memorable"... but people remember the most recent goals..

"favorite" is definitely different from best.

Sure, Suarez didn't have one goal in the top 10 and he scored some incredible goals. But he's not liked because he's a me feiner
