Best bit of business.

Crazy to think that although Robertson was £8m - that was essentially us just matching the fee Hull were paying for Stewart, who doesn't even get in their first team.

And when he does he's shite

Best swap deal ever

Coutinho was fantastic bit of business regardless of the selling price. We paid, what, 8m for him? Robertson is turning out to be a very canny buy at a similar price. It is the kind of signing that will have teams across the league asking their scouts why the fuck they weren't recommending him. These are rare jewels and the kind of under the radar signings that qualify under 'great business'. Salah, even though he was in a different price bracket, is turning out to be simply astounding value.

We've had a good couple of transfer windows under Klopp but Everton and Milan, what disaster. Both clubs spent heavily and are no better than last season.

Someone said about Milan's form massively improving in the last couple of months... and they just beat Roma in Rome last night. Seems they're starting to click just in time to batter Arsenal. Shame about The Ev like.

The £900,000 that Paisley spent in 1977 to sign Dalglish, Souness and Hansen.

(OK, Souness joined in Jan 1978, but anyway)

Fucking Genarro working his magic ... Cutrone leading the way.

I think our success at getting money for old rope is part of the reason our net spend is low. I agree that it'd be nice to it to be pushed out further but it is definitely reduced by our greater ability to sell.

I reckon we'll get £15m+ for Mignolet - he'd be great at a newly promoted or lower table club that is under pressure and facing lots of shots. I think he'll be in high demand.

Suarez is easily #1 on the list. Came for 20 odd million and very quickly established himself as one of the best in the world.

Salah, if he keeps up his current form, is next up and fingers crossed, maybe ties with or overtakes Suarez in the future.

Coutinho we got for a bargain basement fee but we also invested a lot in developing him.

We got Hyypia (2.6) and Henchoz (3.5) both at pretty cheap fees - although that is probably the equivalent of a 10 - 15m level purchase these days.

In fairness, don't forget Rafa actually pointed us to little Phil, after his time @ Milan. So we could argue his hand in good business extended beyond his time with us!

Four years to the day since Liverpool signed Philippe Coutinho, former director of football Damien Comolli has revealed how ex-Reds manager Rafa Benítez’s input was a huge factor in his signature.
The Brazilian international has become a fan faovorite at Anfield since completing an £8.5m transfer from Inter Milan in 2013, a move which former Nerazzurri director Piro Ausilio still regrets allowing to happen.
In an interview with ESPN, Comolli explained that because of the massive outlay in the months prior to the 2012/13 pre-season (which included the likes of Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing being bought for vast sums of money), that spending in the summer would be limited to €10 million per player, and each new arrival had to be under the age of 21:
“In the spring of 2012, the owners told me that we had a limited spending budget per player of €10 million and we could only sign players who were under 21.
“I said to the scout: ‘Coutinho becomes our priority’ because we were looking for a wide player to replace Dirk Kuyt. He (Coutinho) was not available because Inter transferred him to Espanyol [on loan] later on.”
Comolli revealed the recommendation to sign the then 19-year-old had come from Benítez. The Spaniard worked briefly with Coutinho at the San Siro before he was sacked in winter 2010, and told Liverpool’s academy director Frank McParland that Coutinho was a player with lots of potential, and that he might be attainable because Inter didn’t realise how good he would go on to become:
“We didn’t even know he was that good – it was difficult to watch him play because he was never playing at Inter. We knew about him, we knew he was good, but it was only when Rafa said he’s going to be world-class.
“When somebody like Rafa says a thing about a player like this, you listen. The head of recruitment said he was the best we could get. But I was sacked, then Kenny (Dalglish) was sacked.
”In the end, Coutinho was brought to Anfield by Dalglish’s replacement in January, in a month that also saw Daniel Sturridge join with both players costing a combined £21m. His recent form has led to speculation linking him with Barcelona, but signing a five-year deal last week has put that to bed for the time being.

Wow, I didn't know this. Maybe he is "agent Benitez" after all; looking out for us even after being fired.

Of course he is, for whatever irrational reason, like us, he'd bonded to the club forever. No marriage, no divorce, no corporate takeover , no temporary argument will ever really break this silly, nonsensical, idealistic bond.

Even the most worldly and cynical of us still have the little kid cheering us on inside. Look around.

(steps down off soap box)

My enduring memory of this fella will be his leadership in the French strike at the 2010 World Cup

After taking Ireland's place. Yeah they did.
