Former Liverpool midfielder Patrik Berger has retired from football at the age of 36 due to persistent knee problems.

Berger, who spent seven years at Anfield before moving on to Portsmouth and Aston Villa, signed a two-year contract with Sparta Prague in May 2008 but injury has forced him to hang up his boots.

Sparta coach Jozef Chovanec said: "Patrik told me yesterday, 'It's over. My knee doesn't support the burden anymore'.

"We have to deal with it.

"Thank you Patrik for everything you have done for Sparta and the entire Czech football."

Berger, who also had a loan spell at Stoke during an 11-year spell in England, has not been able to make an appearance for Sparta since August 8.

The Czech international won 44 caps and was a key part of the team which reached the Euro 96 final, where they lost 2-1 to Germany. Berger scored a penalty to put the Czechs in front in the final, before two Oliver Bierhoff goals won the match for Germany.

I thought he was quality for the first couple of seasons we had him.

Remember when he told Barry to join us and MON kicked him out of the club.

Haha.

His first 3 games were in unreal.

Off the bench at Leicster city and scores 2 crackers.

Starts against Chelsea next game scores 2 more.

3rd game he scores in Europe.

Amazing start that never continued.

Great goal at OT too.

I always liked Berger as a kid, just a pity about the injuries really.

That ball he played through to Owen in the FA Cup final of 2001 was immense.

He was possibly one of our sexiest footballers. According to Maa Windever.

Yeah, I used to love him. I was desperate for us to sign him after the Euros and was over the moon when we did.

With a name like his, I am surprised in you Rosco.

Very good.

I loved Fowler and Collymore playing together, when Berger played Collymore usually got dropped.

Berger seemed to play on the left no? He certainly offered goals, work rate, and dashing good looks. Stan prolly contributed towards getting dropped with a lack of appearances and/or application in training.

Evans started off trying play him as a striker (because Berger told him he could play there, initially, and perversely Evans took the opinion of the player). Then he played centrally behind Fowler at times too, and after that Owen started to emerge so that was the end of Stan.

Stan said at the time that Evans bought him with no real idea of how to use him, and it seemed the same with Berger too at times.

Stan says a lot of things.

True true.

Berger was too greedy and not able to lift his head to play on the wing.

I will remember Paddy for thrashing the ball home from almost the halfway line against Utd and for the wondrous ball out of defence to Owen in the cup final. Great player.

He was frustrating, ideally he should have played on the left of a central three in midfield but he rarely tracked back well enough (and when he did he usually gave a foul away). Houllier mostly used him on the left though.

Berger was a great MOTD player; he looked superb in 5 minutes of highlights, not so hot when you watch the full 90. Had a good shot, he was frequently in goal of the month as well which (a) masked his deficiencies & (b) lead fans of other teams to think he was better than he actually was.

He was a decent player, scored some crackers, played good footy. He would be a Godsend to our current team.

Berger had real flair and a gift for doing the unexpected. He's the sort of player we desperately need in the squad now.

Anyone remember the screamer of a free kick he scored against the Scum at Old Trafford?

Oh but yes, Portly. I mentioned that very goal earlier. They wore the green kit that day and Berger's strike was an act of violence. Incredible hit.

When the Czechs got to the final of Euro 96 (I was there! 🙂) the player who caught everybody's eye was Karel Poborsky, and the Scum snapped him up. We signed Berger. I soon came to realise that Berger was actually a much better player than Poborsky.

I can't believe that people are criticising Berger in this thread. As far as I am concerned, The Lying Rag shone out of his arse.

Loved him. He was fucking great. Who's been better on the left since him?
I remember his knee going against Leeds in the game Viduka got 4. Gutted

Don't mind me, I was about 14 when I took a dislike to him and it had nothing to do with his ability.

It was the hairband, wasn't it, Rosco?

I can understand that.

It sounds as though you only remember Paddy from his later days at Anfield. After that bad knee injury, he was never the player he used to be. 🙁
