I reckon he took far too long out. He's such a swot, who tends towards abstractions, that long period stuck in his house developing apps and writing tactical analyses has made him even more intractable and aloof.

If you lot want to believe in managerial mystical powers, by all means go ahead.

But you're going to have to re evaluate Benitez if you do. If he's so spectacularly good yet he's doing worse than Di Matteo - and butchered his last job at Inter, after turning us into a midtable team, it doesn't make much sense does it?

Where are those powers now?

So you wouldn't care if we appointed Benitez as manager next season? Or if we replaced Rodgers with Warnock or that baseball cap wearing knobhead from Stoke?
Do you think Barca would have the same effectiveness should Pulis take over and turn them into long ball merchant thugs?

It just shows that Benitez hasnt recovered after the 08/09 season. He's been dire ever since and isnt a very good manager these days.

Tbh, I'd say a bullet dodged in terms of rehiring him last summer.

You can never tell really - he may have turned out well at the club he loves, but I think even his most ardent fans will start realizing that his last 18 months at Liverpool and his spells at Inter and Chelsea show a man who's struggling to regain his 'form' as the man who led Valencia and Liverpool. I hope he gets a chance at Real and dominates there. I have no issue with him failing at Chelsea - I hope he sells Mata to us for 9 million. It's only fair.

I think most of us only just managed to hold on to our sanity during the Hicks and Gillett era, so god knows what it did to Benitez. Moving to work for Abramovich was a bit like Anne Frank fleeing to Fred West's basement.

What the stats show here is that when you give two managers the same squad the outcome is going to be largely the same even though the style might differ.

That is, the game is all about the players - the managers aren't important.
