Rafa Benitez: Jose Mourinho not right for Real

By Soccernet staff

May 20, 2010

Rafael Benitez has cast doubt over whether Jose Mourinho would be the right man to coach Real Madrid, despite his former rival making constant overtures to the Spanish club.

Mourinho has made no secret of the fact that he would love to work at the Bernabeu and ahead of Saturday's Champions League final has reiterated that belief.

"I want to go to Real Madrid, 100%. If I didn't get there, I would leave football with a void in my career.," Mourinho told Madrid-based newspaper Marca on Thursday.

"To get me to leave this club after two years of incredible work, only Real Madrid could achieve that. If I go, I will move with a clear conscience having changed the club."

Benitez has been touted as a possible candidate to replace Mourinho at Inter but the Liverpool manager, who worked with Real's youth and reserve teams earlier in his career, is unconvinced the Portuguese would be a good fit in the Spanish capital.

"I know Mourinho has dreamed a lot of coaching Real Madrid but I do not know if he is the right person to train Madrid," Benitez said.

"[Manuel] Pellegrini has done a great job and deserves great respect because he's still coach and it's not pleasant to hear talk about who's going to replace you."

So who is the right man Rafa? You?

6 championships in a row speaks for itself.

He's just drawing parallels with what's going on here, making the point about people talking about other suitable managers while he's still in a job.

It's not about Jose.

""I know Mourinho has dreamed a lot of coaching Real Madrid but I do not know if he is the right person to train Madrid"

That's pretty clear.

He then goes on to make the point about Pellegrini still being the right man for the job. Maybe he's having a pop at Jose in the process, but anyway, his point is fairly obvious.

It's pretty deflating reading the increasing 'Jose to Madrid' speculation.

I actually had a 20% hope he was coming to save us.

Yes, it is.

I hope they take his point.

Mourinho's career is so very Football manager 09.

Porto - One of the largest teams in Portugal. Will always be in the top 4.

Chelsea - had millions and millions to spend with a decent squad already from Ranieri

Inter - Juve down the shitter, AC Milan clearly rebuilding as 80% of their first team are 33+ and Inter with stupid amounts of money to spend..

Real Madrid the obvious place for him - a team that is always going to succeed and the likelihood of being a complete failure is minimal.. Even without a manager they would challenge for the title.

His talent is in dealing with big ego's... getting them motivated and turning them into ruthless winners. Perfect person for Real Madrid.

Porto won the fucking Champions' League
Chelsea hadn't won anything in 50 years
Inter have been in the CL final how many times?

His talent is in winning trophies, at every club he goes to, in every country he manages in, in every competition.

He wins trophies. Wherever he goes with whatever team. At smaller clubs he overachieved, at huge clubs he achieves everything he is expected to.

Denegrate the man for his personality, manner etc, If you wish. but his achievements speak for themselves.

Exactly so.

But you know what - Rafa may actually have a point about Mourinho and Real, even if that isn't his main purpose. Mourinho is absolutely a winner and there's no question in my mind that he'd do well with us, none whatsoever, but he does not do it in the cavalier style which Real demand. Capello won the title for them and they still shifted him out straight afterwards because of his conservative approach.

Yes, but they need someone to topple Barca and rub their fucking noses in it

And unlike Capello, Mourinho has gobby charm and a similar stylish charisma (that Pep also has, in a nicer, more humble way)

They sacked Del Bosque after he won back to back league titles and two CL's.

Pellegrini doesn't have a leg to stand on.

All it is, is Benitez having a pop back Mourinho. Mourinho said in an interview to the times on Sunday that Liverpool have gotten gradually worse since 2004. Coincidently when Benitez took charge.

Not like mourinho is telling a lie, rafa is a joke.
For anyone that doubts mourinhos managerial abilities, then they obviously have no idea..

Not to mention adopting outrageous accents!

He'd have been in his element with the team of the 70s that included Souey and McDermott.

DWM, by "cavalier" I mean "placing heavy emphasis on attack". I'm sure Mourinho's a good enough coach to achieve that if he sees an advantage in doing so, but he's never prioritised it when he had the choice. Witness his falling-out with Abramovich over the issue.

I wouldn't say his first Chav team (consisting of the flying wingers Duff and Robben) were too defensive.

Fair point, but it didn't last. In the end Mourinho reverted to type and that was where the trouble with Abramovich had its roots.

I don't think he signed either of those players, but could be wrong

Maybe Rafa was hoping to get the Real job and is bitter?

Or Rafa is hitting back at Mourinho's comments about us being in decline over the past 5 years?

I hope Mourinho comes to us, regardless of our ownership situation.

If we're still broke, then we can see if Mourinho is really that great as all his admirers claim to be.

If we have decent sums, then I guess we'll prob win the league with him as manager.

So yeah, Rafa has to go! Let's bring in Mourinho!
